Nets to retire Jason Kidd's jersey on Oct. 17 during preseason game

By Matt Moore | NBA writer

Update: The Nets are apparently doing this before... a preseason game. Weird.

Apparently this is on account of Kidd likely being suspended for the beginning of the season in connection with his DUI plea deal.

Nets coach Jason Kidd played six and a half seasons for the then-New-Jersey Nets, racking up four All-Star appearances and MVP award votes. Now the Brooklyn Nets say they plan to retire Kidd's No. 5 jersey.

It would make sense that the Nets be the first to retire his jersey, with his prime having come there. The Nets were perennial contenders with Kidd at the helm along with Kenyon Martin, Vince Carter, and Richard Jefferson, and made the Finals in back to back seasons of 2002 and 2003. Kidd finished with an average of 15 points, seven rebounds, and nine assists while playing with New Jersey.

He was hired last spring as the new head coach to replace P.J. Carlesimo after retiring from the NBA.

The Mavericks seem to be a lock to eventually retire Kidd's number as well, as soon as the awkwardness between owner Mark Cuban and Kidd over the decision not to re-sign him for what he wanted prompted a separation in 2012. Kidd did spend eight seasons in Dallas, including his only championship season in 2011. The Mavericks drafted him 2nd overall in the 1994 draft. Phoenix is a bigger, and more complicated question, after he was spectacular there but was traded in 2001.

Kidd, in addition to being the head coach, is reportedly purchasing half of former minority owner Jay-Z's stake in the team.
