Seattle's Chris Hansen fined for Kings arena block bid

By Matt Moore | NBA writer

Last month, prospective Seattle owner Chris Hansen, who lost out on his bid to purchase and relocate the Kings earlier this year, was revealed as a donor to a cause in pursuit of blocking the new Kings arena. The arena was a pivotal part of the Sacramento group lead by Vivek Ranadive's successful effort to keep the team in Sactown. Now the Sacramento Bee reports that Hansen has agreed to pay a fine for failure to report his involvement in the fund.

Chris Hansen, the hedge fund manager who attempted to buy the Kings and move them to Seattle, and two members of a political committee have agreed to pay a $50,000 fine for failing to report the source of money for an effort in Sacramento to collect signatures for a ballot measure seeking a vote on the city's arena subsidy.

Hansen, along with political consultant Brandon Powers and treasurer Lysa Ray of Citizens for a Voice in Government, agreed to pay the penalty, according to Fair Political Practices Commission records released today.

Hansen apologized for his involvement in the fund, after it was discovered.

It's obviously a bad look for Hansen and the question on everyone's mind is if this will impact his bid in the future for another relocation effort or an expansion team. Yes, money always talks in the NBA, but if that was always the situation, the Kings would already be on their way to Seattle. The decision was a political one, and after Hansen's behavior throughout the process, you have to wonder if the owners consider it to be a political liability to bring him in, no matter how much money he has.
