The Suns are in a complete rebuild, and they've made that obvious. That gets a little awkward for the veterans with sizeable contracts. The standard play is to act like everything is normal, and you're just going to go out there and play hard and "you never know what could happen."
Well, Marcin Gortat knows what's going to happen. And he's cool with it. Suns blog Bright Side of the Sun spoke with the big man about his future, and he was pretty honest about it.
"We all know what's going to happen," Gortat said to the crowd of reporters with his usual refreshing display of candor. "It's a business. I totally understand that. I totally understand the situation.
"There's no hard feelings. I will try to do everything that's necessary to win basketball games, and whatever happens happens. I'm grateful for everything I had in this team."
via Phoenix Suns Marcin Gortat knows he's on the trade block, has to help young centers grow - Bright Side Of The Sun.
That's a remarkably refreshing and mature way to go about this. Gortat took some heat last year for having trouble with the coaching staff and being frustrated with his role, but he also said he wanted to "go down with the ship" last year. Gortat's agent said on draft night the Suns assured them they have no plans to trade Gortat despite drafting Alex Len, but that was then and this is now.
Gortat's on an expiring contract, and is a big who can work in the pick and roll and make an impact on both ends. There will be offers and don't be surprised if the Suns take one of them. But at least until then, Gortat's going to be a pro about it.
