From CBSSports.com's Ken Berger, good news for Marc Gasol and his knee injury:
Marc Gasol has a Grade 2 MCL sprain that does not require surgery, league source says. He is out indefinitely while the sprain heals.— Ken Berger (@KBergCBS) November 23, 2013
Obviously a significant injury, but not needing surgery is a big bump, not having it be a complete tear is a huge deal, and while he's out indefinitely, this is a lot better than the torn MCL many feared it was on Friday night.
Without Gasol, the Grizzlies will start Kosta Koufos, who they traded for on draft night. Koufos gives them a capable starter but the Grizzlies will miss Gasol on both ends of the floor in a big way. He's their best passer, screen-setter, floor-spacer, able to score from mid-range and in the post, and their best defender both in the pick and roll and at the rim.
The Grizzlies had just started to figure out how to play under Dave Joerger and this clearly represents a major step back. But the Grizzlies have always responded well when faced with injuries and adversity. We'll see how they manage to stay afloat with Gasol on the shelf.
