Cavs' Kyrie Irving has MRI, day to day with left knee contusion

By Zach Harper | NBA writer

That scary sight in the Cleveland Cavaliers' loss to the Indiana Pacers Tuesday night was Kyrie Irving going down to the floor during a transition opportunity. He had to be helped off the floor and into the locker room. Irving returned to the game and played nearly the entire fourth quarter. The Cavs still wanted to make sure everything in the knee was sound and had their point guard get an MRI Wednesday.

Turns out that Irving is relatively OK and is listed as day-to-day with a left knee contusion. The MRI results didn't reveal any significant damage to his knee.

In what has been a frustrating season for the Cavaliers, Irving going down with a big knee injury would have basically ended it. He's their leading scorer at 22.2 points per game and their top distributor with an assist average of 6.1. It looks like Irving avoided another injury that would have caused him to miss a big stretch of games for his third straight season.

Irving missed 15 games in the lockout-shortened season in 2011-12. He also missed 23 games in the full 82-game campaign in 2012-13. He's played in every game for the Cavs this season. The Cavaliers play Thursday night at home against the Orlando Magic. If his knee isn't better, he could miss his first game of the season.
