During the first quarter of the Dallas Mavericks' 87-78 victory over the Washington Wizards, Dirk Nowitzki sprained his left ankle. While the injury isn't thought to be all that serious, it did keep him out of the Mavs' shootaround on Friday and it's questionable whether or not he'll be in the lineup for the game against the Los Angeles Clippers Friday night.

From ESPN Dallas:

Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki is questionable for Friday night's game against the Los Angeles Clippers, two days after he sprained his left ankle in the first minute of a win over the Washington Wizards.

He returned to play 32 minutes against the Wizards, but coach Rick Carlisle said the Mavs' leading scorer would be a game-time decision against the Clippers.

Nowitzki did not participate in the Mavs' morning shootaround, riding the exercise bike on the side. Carlisle said he didn't believe that Nowitzki was dealing with significant swelling in the ankle.

Nowitzki played on the bad ankle after he sprained it against the Wizards but was mostly ineffective in terms of scoring the ball. He finished with nine points on 3-of-14 from the field and grabbed five rebounds. He did manage to dish out four assists as Monta Ellis carried the load for most of the night.

The Mavericks are currently eighth in the Western Conference at 19-13, three games ahead of the Minnesota Timberwolves for the 8-seed. They're just a half game behind the Suns for the 7-seed.
