NBA acknowledges missing foul on Mavericks in win over Pelicans

By Matt Moore | NBA writer

The NBA announced Sunday afternoon that a foul should have been called Saturday night on the Mavericks' Monta Ellis in Dallas' win over the New Orleans Pelicans. Out of timeouts, down three, Pelicans guard Austin Rivers (forced into action due to the injury to Jrue Holiday) took the ball up court, and after looking a little uncertain, was forced into a shot attempt.

On Sunday, the NBA released the following statement:

Rod Thorn, NBA President, Basketball Operations, issued the following statement today regarding a missed foul call late in the fourth quarter of the Dallas Mavericks' 110-107 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Jan. 11, at American Airlines Center:

“After reviewing postgame video, we have determined a foul should have been called on Dallas' Monta Ellis for illegal contact on the arms of New Orleans' Austin Rivers while Rivers was attempting a three-point field goal. Rivers should have been awarded three free throws with 0.6 left on the clock.”

So I'm sure the Pelicans feel great about that. That helps a lot. It's not that there's a solution for this. You can't replay the end of a game, you can't award the Pelicans a win (it would have only tied the game), and you have to acknowledge the mistake. But it's not going to actually do anything. If the Pelicans were to make a playoff push vs. Dallas, that could wind up deciding the tiebreaker.

It's the second time this season the league has had to acknowledge a no-call on the Mavericks. Maybe all those years of Mark Cuban screaming about officiating has worn down the league.
