United States draws Turkey, Ukraine in Basketball World Cup

By Royce Young | NBA writer

The United States are already the heavy favorites coming into the 2014 Basketball World Cup in Spain. So they don't really need much help.

But after their group was drawn on Monday, which includes Turkey, Finland, New Zealand, Ukraine and the Dominican Republic, it appears they've been handed a pretty easy pass to the knockout round.

The U.S. already have committments from Kevin Durant and Kevin Love, and should feature a strong roster to take to Spain. (Here's the 28-player pool they're choosing from.)

The U.S. won the last World Championship (when it was still called that in 2010), which was held in Turkey as Durant was named tournament MVP.

The likely top competition for the U.S. this time around will come from a stacked Spain squad that has homecourt advantage, as well as France, Argentina and the always scrappy Greece.

Here are the four groups and where their games will be held:

Group A (Granada): Spain, Egypt, Iran, Serbia, Brazil, France

Group B (Sevilla): Argentina, Senegal, Philippines, Croatia, Puerto Rico, Greece

Group C (Bilbao): USA, Finland, New Zealand, Ukraine, Dominican Republic, Turkey

Group D (Las Palmas): Lithuania, Angola, Korea, Slovenia, Mexico, Australia
