Nets' coach Jason Kidd played against Deron Williams in practice

By Zach Harper | NBA writer

In 19 seasons in the NBA, Jason Kidd was one of the best point guards we've ever seen. The sure-fire Hall of Famer was a lethal force on both ends of the floor in his prime and even in his final seasons, he was able to help the Dallas Mavericks win a ring and the New York Knicks enjoy their best season in more than a decade. Now that he's the coach of the Brooklyn Nets, Kidd doesn't have many opportunities to get those competitive juices flowing on the court.

Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News tells us that in a recent practice, Kidd laced up the sneakers and had a "spirited exchange" by going head-to-head with Nets' point guard Deron Williams. Perhaps it was just a way to see if Kidd still had it or maybe it was a way of teaching Williams a few things on the court in real-time.

Don't let the tight suit fool you: Jason Kidd can still ball and still has those juices flowing.

During another disappointing and injury-riddled season for Deron Williams, Kidd stepped on the court and went head-to-head with the point guard in a spirited exchange at a recent practice, a source told the Daily News.

That's one way to get through to the underachieving star: challenge him with Hall of Fame skills.

There are two ways of taking this story. One way is that it's great Kidd is able to use those "Hall of Fame skills" to give Williams some elite knowledge of the game in a practice situation. That kind of learning can be invaluable and it may help Williams get his season back on track in a hurry. The other way of taking that is you have to be a little concerned that there was a "spirited exchange" between your 40-year old coach and a 29-year old franchise point guard who is still owed over $60 million through the 2015-16 season.

Granted, that's due to Williams' ankle troubles and there is little doubt he'd return to being an elite point guard worthy of the five-year, $98 million deal he signed with the Nets in 2012. But it can't be an easy feeling to know your coach can challenge your franchise player and have it be described as "spirited." Williams has struggled with his ankles and his game since coming to the Nets in a 2011 trade but did enjoy an All-Star season in 2011-12.
