Yahoo Sports reports that the Bobcats are engaged in talks to buy out veteran guard Ben Gordon, making him another veteran pick up on the open market post-deadline.

The Charlotte Bobcats are progressing in discussions on a contract buyout with guard Ben Gordon, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Gordon is in the final season of a five-year, $55 million contract.

Once a buyout is completed and Gordon clears waivers, he'll become a free agent.

Bringing in Gary Neal through trade on Thursday essentially negates the need for Gordon, and Gordon hasn't been happy since being traded to Charlotte two years ago from Detroit. It seems strange to think about now, but Gordon was a key component in the Bulls' 2009 first-round push of the Boston Celtics, and had been a promising part of the Bulls' success in the early 2000's. Then he got to Detroit, and like many who have signed there, the wheels completely fell off. He became an albatross contract, eventually getting moved for Corey Maggette.

He's barely played for Charlotte this season, averaging 5.3 points in 14.4 minutes per gae.

Still, there's a good chance that on a contender, he could play a useful role as a shooter at age 31. He should find a home once he clears waivers, if the buyout is completed.
