Jeff Pearlman's new book "Showtime" is sure to sell quite a few copies. It tells the story of those legendary 80's Lakers teams which helped boost the popularity of the NBA into the stratosphere and secure the TV deals which gave the NBA the potential to become the mega-brand it did in the Jordan era.
That team is regarded as one of the best of all time. And they were known for their lifestyle as much as their play on-court. The late Lakers owner Jerry Buss used to party with Magic Johnson as a matter of fact. CBS Sports Network show Boomer and Carton discussed some of the details of the parties in the book and... well... here.
So that's... disgusting. I mean, different time, and consenting adults, and all... but that's some pretty far-out objectification of women. Johnson was young, rich, and again, cultural attitudes were very... let's say differen towards women in the 80's. But looking back on it, it just doesn't sit right.
There's no reason to change our attitudes about Johnson, he's been a remarkable force for good in the world and for basketball. There's no reason to get up in arms about it. It's just something that makes you go, or at least makes me go "Gross."
It also puts LeBron's partying, at least what we know if it, in a very different light.
Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go take a bleach shower and pray I never have daughters.
