The Cleveland Cavaliers have fired head coach Mike Brown, the team announced Monday. The Cavs hired Brown last April, giving him a five-year, $20-million deal. Cleveland also announced that David Griffin has been hired as general manager. Griffin took over the position on an interim basis in February after the dismissal of Chris Grant.

The Cavaliers had a mandate to make the playoffs this past season, and they fell short with a 33-49 record. Brown has a reputation as a defensive coach, but Cleveland finished 19th in defensive efficiency. The team had a late-season rally after acquiring Spencer Hawes from the Philadelphia 76ers, but it was not enough to make the postseason, even in a dreadful Eastern Conference.

Both Brown and the departed Byron Scott had trouble getting the Cavs' backcourt of Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters to complement each other on either end, and that will likely be the main challenge for whoever is next.
