Banned Clippers owner Donald Sterling attacked Magic Johnson over his charitable contributions and said the NBA great should be "ashamed" of being HIV positive in an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper which ran Monday.
Sterling used the phrase "he got those AIDS" when talking about Johnson. (Johnson has never been diagnosed with AIDS, he was diagnosed with HIV in 1991.) And he made generalizations about the difference between Jewish American charitable contributions and African American charitable contributions.
Sterling also said that the players still love him and that the owners support him.
Adam Silver issued a statement Monday night condemning Sterling's comments:
"I just read a transcript of Donald Sterling's interview with Anderson Cooper and while Magic Johnson doesn't need me to, I feel compelled on behalf of the NBA family to apologize to him that he continues to be dragged into this situation and be degraded by such a malicious and personal attack. The NBA Board of Governors is continuing with its process to remove Mr. Sterling as expeditiously as possible."
