Things are pretty crazy in Memphis. In the immediate aftermath of the news that head coach Dave Joerger had rejected the Minnesota Timberwolves' coaching offer, Grizzlies owner Robert Pera decided to do a Twitter Q&A.
With speculation that the Joerger saga might not be over, one fan asked Pera if the coach would return next season.
@RaganSmash YES! And contrary to reports, I never had a conversation with Minnesota..it never got that far— Robert J Pera (@RobertPera) May 25, 2014
Another asked what changed Pera's mind about Joerger.
@JohnnyNBA I think Dave is a great coach. But, personnel has to want to be in Memphis. I know now Dave 100% wants to be here— Robert J Pera (@RobertPera) May 25, 2014
Pera said that he hadn't "really talked" one-on-one with the man who coached Memphis last season.
@thesulton25 I never really talked 1:1 with Joerger before this weekend. I think he's a great coach.— Robert J Pera (@RobertPera) May 25, 2014
It sounds like, next year, those conversations will be more frequent:
@tommy_ewing We are so close...I can feel it. I think we just need to be tighter as a team between Dave,myself,FO,players— Robert J Pera (@RobertPera) May 25, 2014
He named several players on the Grizzlies roster who he'd like to see "step up" next season, asking fans to "help get on their case about training right now." He also said he was "very involved" with the team's draft process.
On that subject, Pera tweeted, "I have a feeling that in several years, Dante Exum will be seen as best player from this draft class." He then deleted it.
While Pera talked to fans, Joerger talked to each Memphis player, according to Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal. The Grizzlies still have to find a general manager, and Pera indicated on Twitter that interim GM Chris Wallace will be considered. Memphis is also interested in Orlando Magic assistant general manager Matt Lloyd, according to Sam Amick of USA Today.
