Duncan on Letterman: 'I thought about calling it a career' after Finals

By Matt Moore | NBA writer

Spurs icon Tim Duncan appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman Tuesday an admitted that after winning the title, he considered walking away before eventually deciding to opt in for (at least) one more season.

“I thought about calling it a career… But I felt I could at least do one more year. I felt I was still effective. I felt I could still play and help the team."

Duncan opted in Monday for the last year of his contract at $10.3 million.

Duncan also said that Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has been pressuring him to consider coaching, to stay in the game. But Duncan was reticent toward that idea. There is widespread speculation that when Duncan retires, he will rarely if ever appear in connection with the NBA again.

Duncan won't make any determinations about his future beyond next season until he gets there. He could walk away at the end of his deal, or re-up for more seasons if he still feels he can. But this does show that he's that close to calling it. He won't have a farewell season, it's not in his DNA. But just be aware that if you thought it was possible next year is his last season, last year nearly was too.
