ESPN reports that the Boston Celtics contacted Sacramento Kings free agent point guard Isaiah Thomas Tuesday morning.

The Celtics and Kings have been attached to trade rumors for Rondo for years. The Celtics just selected combo-guard Marcus Smart with the No. 6 pick in the NBA draft last week, and are widely expected to engage in a full-on rebuilding process.

Then again, there have been rumors of Rondo being traded for years and it hasn't happened. Also, there's no reason to think that the Celtics couldn't be reaching out to sign Thomas as an additional point guard behind Rondo.

Thomas averaged 20.3 points and 6.3 assists last season for the Kings.
