ESPN reports that the Dallas Mavericks have agreed to a three-year deal with superstar and future Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki to return to the club on what could be the final deal of his career.

Nowitzki was waiting to re-sign with Dallas until the Carmelo Anthony situation was resolved. Despite Anthony meeting with the Mavericks Wednesday night, this move would signal that the Mavericks know that dream was dead on arrival. After the addition of his $10 million per-season to the books, that pretty much eliminates their ability to sign a max free-agent.

This is likely Nowitzki's last deal. He turns 39 at the conclusion of it. Whether he finishes it out or not will depend on his health and likely if he were to win a second championship.

Either way, he was always expected to re-sign with the Mavericks and had laughed off suggestions otherwise. So now he's off the table for anyone dreaming otherwise, and the Mavericks have their franchise guy back.
