Restricted free agent Gordon Hayward will meet with the Charlotte Hornets early next week, according to Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer. Hornets big man Al Jefferson could help the recruiting process, as he and Hayward are friends from their time together with the Utah Jazz.
It is believed that Hayward will command an extremely lucrative contract. He met with the Cleveland Cavaliers this week, and they reportedly were ready to give him a maximum offer sheet. The Phoenix Suns were reported to be considering the same thing. Both teams might have been scared off by the possibility of Utah matching the offer and retaining him.
Hayward, a multidimensional wing player, would be a tremendous fit in Charlotte. The team needs to improve on offense, and he can create for himself and others. The issue is the salary, which could be as much as $14.8 million next season. He hasn't yet produced like a max player, and while he's only 24 years old and can obviously improve, at that number it'd be a risky investment. If the Jazz don't match, that is.
