I'm told KG's decision was never dependent on Pierce's final destination and he has remained in contact with the #nets.— Alex Raskin (@alexraskinNYC) July 13, 2014
It was thought that Garnett might retire if Pierce didn't re-sign with Brooklyn, but indications have been that Garnett plans to return for the final year of his contract and the $12 million owed him.
Without Pierce, the Nets are set to take a major step back and are still in the luxury tax. Garnett struggled to make an impact last year, and looks to be on his last legs. The Nets don't appear to be really going anywhere. But at least they're stuck in neutral with the Big Ticket.
