Nets snap four-game losing streak, defeat 76ers

CBS wire reports

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Vince Carter scored 21 points and the New Jersey Nets ended a four-game preseason losing streak with a 102-92 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night.

Richard Jefferson added 18 points, Bostjan Nachbar had 13 and Antoine Wright 11 for the Nets (1-4), who never trailed after taking the lead late in the first quarter.

Shavlik Randolph had 13 points to lead the 76ers, who only got 7 points from Allen Iverson on 3-of-12 shooting from the field. Andre Iguodala added 11, and Chris Webber and Kevin Ollie had 10 apiece for Philadelphia (2-3).

Both teams were missing a starter. Nets forward Jason Collins was out with a foot injury and 76ers center Samuel Dalembert was sidelined for the second straight game with a hamstring problem.

With Dalembert out and Webber playing center, the 76ers had little defense inside in the first half. Fifteen of the Nets' 19 baskets in the half were scored in close. New Jersey also hit 18 free throws, with many coming when they were fouled inside.

Carter, who hit 8-of-14 from the field in 29 minutes, and Nachbar helped New Jersey take the lead. They combined for eight points in a 10-2 spurt that gave the Nets a 25-24 lead after the first quarter.

Philadelphia got within 42-41 on a fadeaway jumper by Iverson with 5:19 left in the half.

However, Carter ignited and capped a 15-8 run with a 3-pointer and two free throws to give New Jersey a 57-49 halftime lead.

The Nets put the game away early in the third quarter with a nine-point run that opened a 72-55 lead. Jefferson started it with two free throws and a layup. Carter ended it with a 3-pointer and a reverse jam, which came after the 76ers three times either failed to grab a loose ball or a rebound.
