Hawks use pair of 13-2 runs to down Bobcats in Chapel Hill

CBS wire reports

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Josh Childress scored 16 points and Zaza Pachulia added 15 Friday night to lead the Atlanta Hawks to a 105-94 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats in the final preseason game for both teams.

Childress scored nine of his during garbage time in the fourth quarter to become one of five players in double figures for the Hawks (5-3).

The Bobcats (2-6), who finished the preseason tied for the fewest wins of any NBA team, got 18 points from Walter Hermann. He made three of the six 3-pointers he attempted.

The Hawks gained command of the game with a pair of 13-2 scoring runs in the second half. One spurt came in the middle of the third quarter and another started in the third and carried into the fourth.

The Bobcats led by as many as nine points in the first half behind 10 points from forward Sean May before the Hawks rallied to tie the score at halftime. May finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.

The game was billed as a reunion for second-year players May, Raymond Felton and Marvin Williams, who won the 2005 NCAA title as North Carolina teammates.

However, Hawks forward Williams broke a bone in his left hand during a Thursday practice and didn't play. He will miss up to eight weeks.

Hawks forward Shelden Williams, who played four seasons at Duke before the Hawks selected him fifth overall in the June draft, scored nine points and led the Hawks with seven rebounds playing for Marvin Williams.

The game also marked guard Speedy Claxton's first with the Hawks, who signed him as a free agent in July. Claxton, who scored nine points and added four assists, missed Atlanta's first seven preseason games after breaking the third metacarpal in his left hand five weeks ago.
