NEW ORLEANS -- Joe Johnson scored 10 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter to help the Atlanta Hawks defeat the New Orleans Hornets 107-98 in an NBA preseason game Wednesday night.

Josh Smith added 18 points while Marvin Williams and Salim Stoudamire each added 11 to help the Hawks improve to 7-1 in the preseason.

Hornets second-year center Hilton Armstrong, who started while Tyson Chandler got the night off, led New Orleans with 25 points and 14 rebounds. He was 5-of-7 from the field and 15-of-20 from the foul line.

Melvin Ely added 16 and Chris Paul had 15 for the Hornets (3-4).

Atlanta took the lead for good in the second quarter when Stoudamire hit a 21-footer and a 3-pointer on consecutive possessions, putting Atlanta ahead 40-34. Those shots kicked off a 14-6 run during the final 5:30 of the period to put the Hawks ahead 49-40 at halftime.

Atlanta's largest lead was 86-64 after Smith's free throws.

Armstrong's consecutive baskets inside capped a 15-4 run that began late in the third quarter and briefly pulled New Orleans within single digits at 90-81.

That seemed to serve as Johnson's cue to take over. He hit a runner in traffic, a baseline drive as he was fouled, a long jumper and a 3-pointer to give Atlanta a 100-85 lead.
