Indiana at San Antonio

Spurs 106, Pacers 98

CBSSports.com wire reports

SAN ANTONIO -- Maybe Tony Parker will get the night off next time.

With Tim Duncan kicking back and watching the game in street clothes, Parker had 19 points and eight assists in 23 minutes, and the San Antonio Spurs beat the Indiana Pacers 106-98 in a preseason game Saturday night.

Matt Bonner, starting in place of the resting Duncan, scored 15 points and Michael Finley added 13 on 4-for-6 shooting from 3-point territory for the Spurs (3-2).

Duncan got the night off after finishing with 16 points and 13 rebounds in 26 minutes -- all preseason highs -- Thursday against Cleveland. It's the second game coach Gregg Popovich has allowed the two-time MVP to rest during the preseason.

Parker's effort against the Pacers resulted in preseason highs in points, assists and minutes. But he's not so sure he'll get a holiday.

"Maybe now I'm not going to play next game because of that," Parker said. "I can't wait for the season to start. I'm just trying to stay healthy and just trying to play good to get a win."

Marquis Daniels led Indiana (3-3) with 18 points, going 4-for-6 from behind the arc. Danny Granger added 17 points and T.J. Ford had 16.

Daniels knocked down his first three tries from the 3-point line, including one during the Pacers' 7-0 start through the first 1:29.

But Parker showcased his quickness and shooting touch starting with the next trip down the floor. He immediately hit a jumper from 17 feet and followed with a short jumper on the fast break.

By the end of the quarter, he was driving around Pacers guard T.J. Ford and easily getting off shots over Indiana's interior defense. With the Spurs ahead 21-16, Parker was a part of San Antonio's next three baskets on consecutive trips down the floor.

He dribbled and swerved through the lane and shot past 7-foot-2 rookie Roy Hibbert for a layup. He drove in on Hibbert again and wrapped a pass around the big man to set up an easy layup for Fabricio Oberto. Hibbert was unable to get a hand on the next shot when Parker drove in and fell away from the basket to make it 27-16 with 3:33 to go in the first quarter.

Hibbert entered the game with 12 blocked shots in five games, including four Friday against Memphis. But trying to play help defense on Parker was an eye-opener.

"He has such quickness and he's able to score in a small amount of space," Hibbert said. "He's one of the best."

That was six straight shots for Parker, and he had 12 points and three assists in almost nine minutes of play in the opening quarter.

But with the Spurs facing just two more preseason games, Popovich thinks there's more fine tuning to do.

"I don't know if we can take off now," Popovich said. "We've got to get ready. Tomorrow will be a day off for everybody."

San Antonio led by as many as 18 points early in the second half. But Indiana came back and cut it to 86-82 with 8:41 to play on two free throws by Ford.

The Spurs scored seven unanswered during the next 1:35 to ease away.

"They really shot lights out with 15 3s," Pacers coach Jim O'Brien said. "And Tony Parker was difficult to pressure because he so quick. He gets in 1-on-1 situation in the middle with your big guy, and that's a no-win situation."

Troy Murphy, playing for the first time this preseason after missing the first five games with a sore left foot, scored 12 points in 19 minutes while shooting 5-for-7.

George Hill, the Spurs' No. 1 draft pick, will have an MRI on Monday after spraining his left thumb Tuesday against Detroit. ... Pacers G Travis Diener still has not played in the preseason after missing Saturday with a sore left foot. ... Pacers G-F Mike Dunleavy was given the night off after playing 12 minutes in his first preseason game Friday against Memphis. ... Spurs assistant coach Don Newman missed the game following the death of his wife Simone.
