Without Bosh, Turkoglu, Raptors fall to Sixers

TORONTO -- Thaddeus Young had 11 points, Elton Brand and Samuel Dalembert each scored 10, and the Philadelphia 76ers used a near-perfect performance from the free throw line to beat the Toronto Raptors 84-79 on Wednesday night.

Marco Belinelli and Sonny Weems both scored 12 points for the Raptors, who played without All-Star Chris Bosh (strained left hamstring) and offseason addition Hedo Turkoglu.

Reggie Evans had nine points and nine rebounds for Toronto, which lost 107-98 to Philadelphia on Tuesday night in London, Ontario.

Philadelphia shot 26 for 28 from the free throw line. Rookies Jrue Holiday, who made three of four, and Brandon Bowman, who made one of two, were the only Philadelphia players to miss.

"It was timely to make our free throws," 76ers coach Eddie Jordan said. "We were horrible last night [making 22 of 32] and tonight we needed them to win. Hopefully it's contagious and we keep on going."

Dalembert had seven rebounds and Brand added six for the 76ers, who outrebounded the Raptors 46-37.

Jordan acknowledged that Brand, limited to just 37 games over the past two seasons after rupturing his Achilles' tendon and undergoing shoulder surgery, will need some time to regain his past form.

"He's maybe forcing the issue a little bit. That's OK," Jordan said. "I want him to find his way, be aggressive. I'd rather him be that way than passive."

After peeling ice packs off his knees and shoulder, Brand said he felt strong.

"Back-to-back games, no setbacks, so that's always a positive,' Brand said. "You see guys on the Raptors resting because of their hamstrings and other injuries. It's good to feel good, even this early in the season."

After tying the game 64-all early in the fourth, Toronto fell behind 77-69 with 4:48 to play, then cut it to 79-77 on an alley-oop dunk by Weems with 1:27 left.

After Weems couldn't finish his drive on Toronto's next possession, Philadelphia's Royal Ivey missed a 3-pointer from the wing, giving Toronto another chance, but Quincy Douby's layup attempt rimmed out.

Marreese Speights and Ivey each made two free throws for Philadelphia, and Toronto rookie DeMar DeRozan missed a 3-pointer from the corner.

"We showed our mettle to win the game," Jordan said. "We know it's a preseason game, but to see guys who will do things, can scramble out a win and do things to just hold a lead, that's a positive thing."

Bosh, who missed all of training camp and also skipped Tuesday's game, was in uniform for this one, but only because he did not have a suit with him at the arena.

Turkoglu, who also sat out Tuesday, is resting after going to the NBA finals with Orlando in June and playing for Turkey's national team in late summer.

Toronto forward Amir Johnson left in the second quarter after he bit through his upper lip, requiring stitches, but returned in the third. He fouled out with eight points in 25 minutes.
