Celtics' Thomas on possible No. 1 pick Fultz: 'We'll figure out how to play together'
Boston point guard Isaiah Thomas is already on speaking terms with the former Washington standout
Isaiah Thomas has put the Celtics in a really tough spot this upcoming summer. He's clearly the reason Boston made it to the Eastern Conference Finals and he doesn't have much longer on his contract with them. The Celtics will soon have to either extend him, get him a new contract once his current one expires, or let him walk.
With how good he's been, the solution should be easy. Bring back Thomas. However, Boston currently has the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft. The player currently projected as the best available prospect is Markelle Fultz out of Washington, who is also a point guard. If Boston drafts Fultz and he's an incredible player right out of the gates, it could lead to issues between him and Thomas over who should have the ball more. However, Thomas doesn't seem to be worried about that at all. He's already spoken with Fultz and is more than ready to make playing with him work.
"He's excited," Thomas said. "I mean, he obviously doesn't know where he's going, but ... he's excited about the opportunity."
Thomas said Fultz inquired about the culture of the Celtics organization, to which Thomas has offered insight into how things work.
"He asks questions; I answer them," Thomas said. "He's a good friend of mine. If it happens, we'll figure out how to play together. If not, we'll go from there."
Thomas gave the obvious professional answer of wanting to make it work, but there's no reason the two can't find out a way to co-exist together should Boston take Fultz. Dual point guard backcourts are normal these days and Boston has been known to run three out at the same time. With Thomas and Fultz already on speaking terms there will likely be no power struggle in Boston should the Celtics choose to take Fultz with the No. 1 pick.
