Eye on Basketball Podcast: Are you playing above your stats?
Zach Harper and Ethan Sherwood Strauss discuss how good Chris Paul is, playing below/above your PER, and the perils of the shaving world.
Ethan Sherwood Strauss joins me on today's episode to talk about whether or not players are as good as we think they are. The biggest topic of that conversation stems off of Thursday's game between the Clippers and the Thunder. Chris Paul is starting to get back to himself on the court and we start looking at the idea of his placement in NBA history amongst point guards. Is he as good as the advanced stats say he is? Can he challenge the legend of Magic Johnson? Is he going to end up the second best point guard in NBA history or is that ridiculous?
We also play a new game that Ethan thought up in which we decide if players are playing above or below their PER. PER is a tool used to measure efficiency and how well a player performs (although defense can hardly be factored in all that well). We look at Brandon Jennings, Isaiah Thomas, Anthony Davis, and Ricky Rubio to see just where they are and if the stats are reflecting their play. Also, is Anthony Davis eclipsing Kevin Love already?
We discuss all of this, plus Derrick Rose's play, the pressure of commercials, and the perils of shaving or not shaving.
