The Atlanta Hawks are still waiting for Mike Budenholzer to be done with the NBA Finals as his San Antonio Spurs battle the Miami Heat, but they aren't waiting to fill out his coaching staff. The Hawks are turning to an old and familiar face right away to help add to the support staff for Budenholzer's arrival to the franchise.

Former Atlanta Hawk and eight-year NBA player Darvin Ham has been hired to be part of Budenholzer's staff, the team announced Saturday.

The Atlanta Hawks have named Darvin Ham as an assistant coach, Hawks Head Coach Mike Budenholzer announced today. Ham spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers.

“Darvin has a great feel for the game and knows what it takes for a team to be successful and compete at a high level," Budenholzer said. “He was a smart player who played with intensity and toughness every night and he has gone about coaching the same way.”

Ham played for the Hawks during the 2002-03 season, averaging 2.4 points, 2 rebounds and 12.3 minutes. For his career, he posted per-game numbers of 2.7 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 12.4 minutes per game while also playing for Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, Washington Wizards, Milwaukee Bucks and Detroit Pistons.

He spent three seasons as an assistant coach for the New Mexico Thunderbirds from 2008 to 2011 and was on the Los Angeles Lakers' coaching staff the previous two season.

Ham was also a participant in the 1997 Dunk Contest and was robbed when he received just a score of 36 for a solid first-round performance.

Come on! That slap the backboard and turn dunk was criminally underrated.
