Hornets' Eric Gordon out 4-6 weeks with knee injury, will not have surgery

Eric Gordon told Yahoo Sports on Friday he will miss 4-6 weeks to "strengthen and rehabilitate" his injured knee, but will not need surgery after receiving a prognosis Thursday from a specialist in Chicago.

"The doctor could tell I was going through a lot of pain," Gordon said. "But I know I can strengthen it during the four- to six-week time period and return. This was a big break. I've been dealing with this injury for a year. To hear that news was good to me because I thought it would be possibly worse."

Controversy erupted this week when Hornets coach Monty Williams told reporters Gordon was still feeling pain and could not play despite tests having shown no structural damage to his right knee after having arthroscopic sugery in February. Gordon himself gave a series of conflicting, vague statements Wednesday concerning the injury and wasn't ruling out missing the entire season.

Sources told CBSSports.com's Ken Berger Thursday night that the injury was not related to his reluctance to re-sign with New Orleans in free agency and his acceptance of a four-year, $58-million offer sheet from Phoenix, which the Hornets matched in restricted free agency.

Gordon being out four to six weeks is still pretty bad for the Hornets, who desperately need the offensive boost despite a strong showing in a season-opening loss to San Antonio. They'll struggle to stay above water until his return -- and given the ambiguous and frankly, at times, confusing nature of the injury.

But they also haven't lost him for the year, and if he can work through the pain and get back on the floor, this at-once scary story might turn out OK after all.
