The Kentucky basketball program will hit the diamond too. Twitter

Karl-Anthony Towns is an awesome basketball player. The Minnesota Timberwolves franchise player had one of the best rookie of the seasons of the past three decades. He unanimously won the Rookie of the Year award after getting selected as the No. 1 overall pick out of Kentucky. He spent just one year under John Calipari at Kentucky but he credits the program with a lot of his understanding and effectiveness on the basketball court.

So he's happy to help give back to the program he loves so much. This weekend, that happened with the John Calipari Celebrity Softball game. Towns and Kentucky alumni showed up to help support Coach Cal and raise money for the American Red Cross for relief toward the floods in Louisiana. Towns was great in the game, and even participated in the home run derby. The derby went to a third round of sudden death and Towns stepped to the plate looking to put this one out of reach. Not only did he do that, but he also put one over the actual outfield wall and not just the softball fence.

That's some serious pop for the basketball player. More importantly, the event raised $250,000 for the American Red Cross.
