Report: Masai Ujiri to make bid for Kyle Lowry at midnight
Raptors general manager Masai Ujiri is reportedly not going to waste time in trying to lock up point guard Kyle Lowry.
Free agency starts at midnight, and Toronto Raptors general manager Masai Ujiri isn't planning to waste any time. Ujiri has repeatedly said that re-signing Kyle Lowry is his No. 1 priority, and he's going to back that up, according to Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.
Expect Toronto GM Masai Ujiri to make aggressive bid to keep Kyle Lowry at midnight, try to wrap up deal before Miami/Houston can engage.— Adrian Wojnarowski (@WojYahooNBA) June 30, 2014
Toronto likely won't be outbid financially, and Ujiri can offer Lowry the opportunity to continue to be the No. 1 playmaker on an improving playoff team, with a set of teammates he's said he loves being around. The should-have-been All-Star has said that he can see himself coming back, but also has mentioned that he wants to compete for a championship.
The Raptors could be vulnerable in that the Houston Rockets and Miami Heat can give Lowry better chances of winning a title right away. Both teams likely need the dust to settle with regards to LeBron James and, in Houston's case, Carmelo Anthony, before Lowry can be presented with a substantive offer, though. This, in addition to simply letting the team's best player see Ujiri is serious, is why it behooves Toronto to try to get this done as quickly as possible.
