Rick Fox says he's a candidate for Knicks coaching job
In a radio interview, Rick Fox said that he's spoken to Phil Jackson about the Knicks' vacant head-coaching position.
NBA TV analyst Rick Fox told NBC Sports Radio that he is a candidate to coach the New York Knicks, and that he has spoken to Knicks president Phil Jackson about the job, via ProBasketballTalk and the New York Daily News:
"Yeah...I've been a candidate for while and what I'm comfortable communicating is that there's really nothing for me to do," Fox told The Erik Kuselias Show on NBC Sports Radio. "Phil has expressed his interest, and the patience for him discovering who is right for that job is left in his court.
"Phil Jackson obviously is with the Knicks now and I've been speaking with him for about four months about that very situation," said Fox, who works for Turner as well as SiriusXM NBA Radio. "I love supporting him and his vision for what's going to go down in New York and we've had those discussions and so he knows I'm open to working with him and doing something as exciting as resurrecting the chances of the Knicks returning to glory."
Fox played for Jackson with the Los Angeles Lakers, and Jackson intends to hire someone with whom he has a prior relationship. Derek Fisher been considered the frontrunner ever since Steve Kerr chose to go to the Golden State Warriors, and a deal could be reached with Fisher as soon as this week, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.
Fox said last month in an interview with Bloomberg Television that he thought Jackson himself should coach New York, but that he would do it if asked, via Newsday. Fox, like Fisher and Kerr, has never coached before. That does not appear to be an obstacle for Jackson.
