Thunder could pursue Jeff Van Gundy, Phil Jackson if Brooks not retained
The Oklahoma City Thunder's backup options to Scott Brooks are reportedly Jeff Van Gundy or Phil Jackson. Not bad Plan B's.
This is a lot like saying "If I dump the significant other I've been with for four years and who recently bought me a boat, I might pursue Kate Upton/Gerard Butler" but it's out there.
Scott Brooks is going to be a free agent on July 1st, and the Thunder have still been unable to come to terms. ESPN reports that the issue is over the number of years. And if for some reason they cannot come to a conclusion with the man who took them to the Finals, they are developing backup plans. Big backup plans. From ESPN:
The reality is that Brooks and his bosses, after months of talks, don't have a deal ... and time is running out. And sources say that the Thunder, just to be safe, have started brainstorming in-house about whom they plan to pursue should negotiations with Brooks collapse. Two names, according to sources, that have come up in those discussions: ESPN's Jeff Van Gundy and, yes, 11-ringed coaching free agent Phil Jackson.
You'd still be wise to expect an extension for Brooks in the near future.
Jackson has been floating around job openings, including one to run basketball operation in Orlando, but pulled out of the deal due to a resistance to living in Orlando. Presumably a coaching job would be a different situation, especially one to contend like in OKC. Nevermind that Jackson's approach likely wouldn't mesh with the fun-loving Thunder who are very much young and energetic or more importantly that Jackson's Triangle system does not fit at all with OKC's personnel.
Jeff Van Gundy is a possibility, but again, you're looking at messing with one of the Thunder' biggest strengths, their chemistry. Brooks has the support of both his All-Stars and just took the team to the Finals. Don't expect these big names to land in the Sooner state.
