OVERVIEW

Most known for being the son of an NBA Hall of Fame center by the same name, Patrick Ewing, Jr. decided to forego his senior season at Georgetown. He played his final two collegiate seasons for the Hoyas, wearing the same No. 33 jersey his father wore for the school, after transferring from Indiana.

Ewing played at Windward High School in White Plains, New York before switching to Holy Innocents' Episcopal School, Marietta High School in Georgia and final to National Christian Academy in Maryland.

Between Indiana and Georgetown, Ewing played in 127 collegiate games, starting 26. He improved his scoring average every year, capped by 6.1 points per game last season, and shot .584 percent from the floor for his career.

ANALYSIS

Positives: Tall, lanky player with experience at small forward and shooting guard ... Lacks the bulk to play in the frontcourt, yet he shows excellent elevation and good timing attacking the glass ... Times his leaps well, dominating the boards as a rebounder and shot blocker as a junior ... Efficient ball handler with a low dribble, but needs to not keep the ball on the floor for too long to avoid turnovers ... Shows crisp passing ability and the vision to locate the open outlet when facing double teams ... Uses his arm extension and wingspan (84-inches), along with outstanding leaping ability (Orlando pre-camp best of 42 inches) to alter the shots of the opponent ... Runs the floor well and is very good at feeding the open teammate instead of forcing his shot ... Does a good job of creating separation from his man, timing his leaps well to get the maximum elevation when firing off his jump shot ... Has worked hard to eliminate the hitch in his set shot and gets good follow-through when shooting ... Demonstrates quick wrist action on his passes and is a classic high flyer around the rim, doing a nice job of getting around the defender for put-backs off the offensive boards ... Has improved his ability as a weak-side defender coming to block the opponent's shot ... Lacks ideal strength, but can cover ground quickly and uses his frame well to stay in front of his man and be an efficient pressure defender ... Looks better when he plays a face-up, one-on-one game ... Can put the ball on the floor for a few dribbles before finishing, showing a strong drive to the basket ... When the bigger forwards get a bit lethargic and fail to put their body on him, he is capable of slipping off and getting all over the offensive glass ... Plays with good energy and has developed into a decent dunker ... Generates a very good lift when going for the rebound or blocked shot.

Negatives: Needs to add more bulk and drastically increase his overall strength ... Despite his solid rebounding skills, he gets pushed out of the box often due to power issues ... Is better covering guards on the perimeter than taking on bigger men in the paint ... Has just an adequate mid-range shot and most of his scoring comes from the high post or on put-backs ... Must show more consistency with his post moves ... Struggles to set his feet properly when attempting perimeter shots and is a marginal free throw shooter with an awkward release (shows a noticeable hitch) ... Lacks range on his outside shot and defenders just let him flow out to the perimeter, knowing how he struggles to connect from that distance (too thin to play the four spot and is a bit of a liability at the three spot due to perimeter shooting deficiencies).

Compares To: JAMES JONES-Portland ... Ewing is a guard trapped in a small forward's body. He lacks the strength to crash the glass with the big boys, yet he comes up with a fair share of rebounds and put-backs. He lacks a deadly outside shot and is a bit turnover prone, but is very effective at altering the opponent's shot. He could have used another year of college development, but with his impressive hops he was able to be drafted in the second round.
