He is just the fourth player in school annals to compile 1,000 points (1,494), 400 rebounds (596) and 300 assists (396) in a career, joining Terrence Greene (1985-89), Tom Kleinschmidt (1991-95) and Dave Corzine (1974-78). He became only the second player in Blue Demons history to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 300 assists and 100 three-point shots made (115) in a career (Kleinschmidt was the first). Mejia was an All-American honorable mention by Street & Smith's, adding EA Sports All-American second-team recognition at Roosevelt High School. He was ranked as the nation's top fifth-year player by HoopScoop after his only season at Storm King Prep. The two-time first team All-State selection was ranked as the 62nd-best prep senior in the country by Prep Stars, named the eighth-best shooting guard in the nation by Athlon and picked as the 16th-best point guard by RivalsHoops.com. The ABCD Camp All-Star played in the EA Sports All-Star game at the United Center, leading his team in scoring with 15 points. He averaged 37 points, 15 rebounds and five assists per game at Storm King Prep and averaged 27 points, eight rebounds and five assists as a senior at Roosevelt High He also averaged 21 points, seven rebounds, five assists as a junior and had a career-high 58 points in one contest. Mejia signed DePaul on November 15, 2002. In 2003-04, he was a member of the Conference USA All-Freshman team. He was the only player in C-USA to record a double figure scoring game, a double figure rebounding game and a double figure assist game that year and became the fourth DePaul freshman to hand out 100 assists (140) in his rookie season, the third-best season total by a DePaul freshman. He scored 253 points (7.9 ppg) in 32 games and averaged 4.4 assists per game while shooting .393 from the floor and .753 from the charity stripe. As a sophomore, Mejia finished 14th in Conference USA in assists (99 total, 3.3 apg) and 29th in scoring (353 points, 11.8 ppg). He was tabbed as one of the three "Players on the Rise" and earned second team All-Conference USA honors from The Sporting News. He led the league's guards with eleven blocked shots and had 36 steals. He also scored a season-best 26 points in win over Marquette. For the season, he had 150 rebounds, including 55 off the offensive glass. In 2005-06, Mejia was twice named to the Big East Conference Weekly Honor Roll on December 12 and January 2. He ranked fifth in the league in field goal percentage (484) and was 17th in scoring (408 points, 15.1 ppg). He grabbed 107 rebounds, doled out 68 assists and came up with 22 steals while blocking four shots. He scored a season-high 30 points (9-9 FT's) at Providence, becoming the 38th player in DePaul history to score 30 or more points in a game. As a senior, Mejia was named to the All-Big East Conference second-team. He became the seventh DePaul player to score 40+ points in a game on December 29 (with a career-high 40 vs. Northwestern State) and was the only player on the squad to start every game that season. In 34 games, he shot .481 from the field (188-of-391), including 42-of-119 shots from three-point range (.353). He made 62-of-103 free throws (.602) for a career-high 480 points, averaging 33.5 minutes, 14.1 points and 2.6 assists per game. He had a career-high 202 rebounds (5.9 rpg), 35 steals and four blocked shots, but also was charged with 72 Personal fouls and 65 turnovers. In 123 games at DePaul, he started 117 times. He connected on 552-of-1,208 field goals (.457), 115-of-351 three-pointers (.328) and 275-of-417 free throws (.659) for 1,494 points, which rank ninth on the school's career-record list. Mejia's 3,838 minutes played rank second and his 396 assists rank sixth in school history. He grabbed 596 rebounds (4.8 rpg), with 206 of those boards coming off the offensive glass. He collected 125 steals with 21 blocked shots, but was called for 240 Personal fouls (2.0 pg) and had 274 turnovers (2.2 pg).
Scouting Report Positives: Has a very good wingspan (6'11") and standing reach (8'9") for a shooting guard, also displaying the lane agility and court speed to stay out in front on the fast break...With his added bulk, he shows adequate agility slashing to the basket and is efficient at finishing in transition...Has just adequate range from the three-point area, but demonstrates a quick release and the ability to set his feet well when firing from behind the arc...More comfortable as a scorer than as a defender, as he has the ability to elude his opponent on the way to the rim thanks to good lateral agility and loose hips...Still a work in progress handling the ball, but does get a decent amount of assists off dish-&-drive plays...Scores most of his points on lay-ups, but has improved his leaping ability a bit to also deliver a nice dunk now and then...Slippery working in the paint and gets a good amount of rebounds due to his reach and wingspan...When fed the ball in the paint, he uses his reach and athleticism to put in a powerful jam.
Negatives: Has added good bulk to his frame, but gets pushed out of the lanes due to his lack of overall strength (bench pressed 185 pounds seven times) and must also improve his leaping ability (31.5-inch vertical)...Seems to lack patience and drops his elbow some, causing him to be very erratic shooting from the free throw line... Shows good court vision, but needs to develop better consistency with his hands (had several key drops of passes last year)...Liability as a ball handler, as he dribbles too high and keeps the ball on the floor too long (quicker guards use their reach to deflect or steal the ball)...Lacks the explosive initial step to get by the quicker defenders and even when he draws contact, his marginal free throw shooting ability negates a lot of opposition fouls...Because of his slow first step, he needs to separate from his man or have a free lane in order to get success as a scorer (usually settles for a pull-up jumper)...Can score in bunches, but just lacks consistency (will disappear for stretches)...Played a lot on the wing in college, but lacks the size and power to match up to forwards at the next level and will have to adjust to two-guard duties...Has decent quickness on the wing, but is not fast enough to play guard in an up tempo attack (step behind on the fast break).
Compares to: DEVIN BROWN-New Orleans...Mejia is really an undersized small forward who will have to shift to the two-guard position. He is very inconsistent from the charity stripe and three-point range to earn quality minutes on the floor. He added some decent bulk to his lanky frame before pre-draft camp action, but he is still woefully weak for a player that will have to make a living slashing to the basket, as he doesn't have the range to be an efficient perimeter shooter. He's a decent rebounder for an off-guard, but his ball handling skills leave a lot to be desired. He might be on the draft's fringes, but looks more like summer league competition will dictate whether he gets into an NBA camp or bolt overseas for Europe competition.
Orlando Pre-draft Camp Measurements: 6-11 Wingspan...8-9 Standing Reach...8.3% Body Fat...31.5-inch Vertical Leap...Bench pressed 185 pounds 7 times...11.87 Lane Agility...3.49 Court Sprint (3/4).
Prep School: Attended Storm King (Cornwall On Hudson, N.Y.) Prep in 2002-03...Averaged 37 points, 15 rebounds and five assists per game that year...Rated as the nation's top fifth-year prep player by HoopScoop...Signed with DePaul University in November 2002.
High School Attended Roosevelt (Bronx, N.Y.) High School: All-American honorable mention by Street & Smith's, adding EA Sports All-American second-team recognition...The two-time first team All-State selection was ranked as the 62nd-best prep senior in the country by Prep Stars, named the eighth-best shooting guard in the nation by Athlon and picked as the 16th-best point guard by RivalsHoops.com...The ABCD Camp All-Star played in the EA Sports All-Star game at the United Center, leading his team in scoring with 15 points...He averaged 27 points, eight rebounds and five assists as a senior at Roosevelt...Averaged 21 points, seven rebounds, five assists as a junior and had a career-high 58 points in one contest.
