OVERVIEW

Rated as the second-best post player in the country by Lindy's magazine entering his final season, White more than lived up to that billing. Playing in a league of standouts, he was named the Big Ten Conference Player of the Year in 2007-08. He added second-team All-American and first-team All-District V accolades, as he was the only player in the league and first Hoosier since Alan Henderson in 1993-94 to average double figures in both scoring and rebounds in the same season.

White became the 10th player in school annals to score more than 1,400 points (1,447) and grab more than 700 rebounds (748) in a career. He would close out his career as the Hoosiers' 16th-leading scorer and ninth-ranked rebounder. His field goal percentage of 56.2 ranks second all-time in Indiana annals.

At Hillcrest high school, White earned Parade All-American, Alabama Gatorade State Player of the Year, Alabama Super 5 Class 6A Player of the Year, first-team All-State and first-team All-West Alabama honors as a senior. He was rated as the 14th-best prospect in the country in the final Insiders.com Top 100 rankings.

White averaged 20 points, 15 rebounds and six blocks as a senior and shot better than 60 percent from the floor during his career. He averaged eight points and eight rebounds as a freshman; 16 points and nine rebounds as a sophomore; 19 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and four assists as a junior.

As a junior, White attended the Nike Camp and NBA Players Association Camp in 2003. That year, he was also a member of the South team at the USA Basketball Youth Development Festival, where he started all five games (averaged 18.6 ppg, 10 rpg, 7 bpg, 6 apg and 6 spg). He finished the Festival with 20 points and 10 rebounds in his team's 135-116 gold medal victory over the North team.

In 2004, White totaled 10 points and eight rebounds in the Jordan Capital Classic and added seven points and five rebounds in the McDonald's All-American Game. He also came off the bench with four points and four rebounds to help the United States to a 99-79 victory over the World Select Team at the 2004 Hoops Summit Presented By Nike.

White garnered Freshman All-American honors and was named Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year in 2004-05. He started all 29 games, averaging 13.3 points per game while pulling down 143 rebounds (4.9 rpg). He shot 57.2 percent from the field and 70.9 percent from the foul line while averaging 28.1 points per game.

Expected to vie for All-American honors, White spent most of the 2005-06 campaign on the sidelines with a left foot fracture that he suffered in an exhibition game vs. St. Joseph's. He would return to action in mid-December, but re-injured the foot in a Jan. 7 game vs. Ohio State and was granted a medical hardship. In five games, he averaged 9.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.

The only Hoosier to start all 32 games, White received second-team All-Big Ten honors in 2006-07. He led the team in scoring (13.8 ppg) and rebounds (7.3 rpg), ranking fifth in the conference in that category. He scored in double figures 24 times and also blocked 73 shots.

In 2007-08, the second-team All-American averaged a career-best 10.3 rebounds per game and also had a career-high 17.4-point scoring average. He made 60.5 percent of his field goals, blocked 54 shots and came up with 26 steals.

ANALYSIS

Positives: Lacks the ideal size you look for in a power forward, but is a high energy type with explosive leaping ability, whether going for the dunk or rebound ... Uses his long wingspan (84-inches) and elevation skills to dominate on both ends of the glass ... Has excellent upper body strength and strong legs to establish position under the rim ... Is very good at tossing around elbows and boxing out the bigger forwards ... Lacks blazing speed, but has a quick stride getting up and down the court ... Very good at drawing contact to get to the foul line and can also bounce out quickly to fire a turnaround jumper ... Once he anchors, opponents struggle to drive on him with drawing charging calls ... Displays very good hands working around the basket, whether crashing the boards or following up for the put-back ... Showed much more stamina, quickness and a power base as a senior, as he is now completely recovered from 2006 foot problems ... Has a solid drop step that he uses when matched up vs. smaller forwards ... Strong enough to move to center when the team plays a 3-2 zone ... Does a good job of working his way through a crowd under the basket and will not hesitate to get physical in attempts to clear out enough room for him to create his shot ... Very disruptive in attempts to impede the opponent's shot when working in the paint, especially from the weak side ... Very creative with his hesitation moves and pump fakes to bait the opponent to come out and defend him ... Shows good touch working around the basket ... Knows how to stay low in his stance and does a good job of getting his body wide and securing the pass to feather the ball into the rim ... Has enough range to hit his jumpers from 12-15 feet out ... Gets most of his scoring on dunks ... Has a developing jump hook when attacking a crowded paint ... Hones in on the glass for the rebound and uses his frame well to box out any opponent that wants to challenge him under the basket ... Was a bit predictable earlier in his career, using his right-handed hook shot, but has now shown ability to shoot with either hand when operating in close range (long-range shooting is still an issue) ... Type of player who wants the ball in pressure situations, showing that he has the ability to electrify a lethargic offense with his high energy and aggressiveness ... High percentage shooter from close range and his ability to draw contact on the way to the basket gets him to the free throw line, where he shows improvement with his release point and quickness on his release ... Shows good quickness coming off the pick-and-roll to cut to the basket ... Also likes to harass the ball handler when hedging on screens ... Tough defender who has the speed to face up to perimeter shooters and times his leaps well as a shot blocker ... Shows good vision distributing the ball vs. double teams ... Uses his length well to keep the high when posting up ... Physical defender who uses his strength, lateral agility and active arms to not only disrupt the perimeter shooter's shot, but also prevent that man from slashing, as he is very effective at keeping position and mirroring his man ... Uses his body well in the post and is very comfortable executing a quick mini sky hook when he has his back to the basket, but his turnaround jumper is really his money shot, thanks to his excellent footwork and spin moves ... Has good mobility to chase down errant shots away from the basket or dive for the loose balls.

Negatives: Not the biggest power forward you will find (school lists him at 6:09, but he's just 6:07.3), but he compensates for that lack of size with excellent strength ... Relies a lot on his ability to get physical with an opponent, but will get into foul trouble when he throws his elbows around wildly ... Has a high release point with his mid-range jumper, but because of size issues, his shot can still be altered by the bigger defender ... Marginal passer on the open floor, except for when pushing it out in the post past double teams ... Struggled for a few years to regain his athleticism and quickness after his series of foot fractures in 2005-06, but appears to be well on the way to 100 percent recovery now ... Does not really have the skills to be creative with the ball in his hands, preferring to put in the resounding dunk, mini sky hook or turnaround jumper to get most of his points, as he knows how to use his power to out-muscle smaller defenders to get those shots off ... Lacks an explosive initial step and has just marginal-to-adequate ball handling skills when facing the basket ... Has good back-to-the-basket scoring skills, but from beyond 10 feet his range and accuracy greatly suffers, especially when taking ill-advised shots from the perimeter ... Even his back-to-the-basket skills are ineffective when a bigger forward has success backing him out ... Seems very hesitant to take shots from three-point area, knowing he does not have range to make those shots ... His pull-up jumper is very inconsistent and he needs to do a better job of driving forward ... Defenders are not apt to bite and come out of the paint often to defend vs. his erratic jump shot.

Compares to: UDONIS HASLEM-Miami ... Actually, White brings back memories of former NBA standout Adrian Dantley (1976-91), but has about 40 more pounds than the former Jazz and Laker (among other teams). Like Haslem, White gets most of his opportunities while playing with his back to the basket. White is a better scoring option than Haslem in the paint, but lacks accuracy and range from long range. He has a huge wingspan that helps him compensate for a lack of ideal size playing power forward, as he has very good success crashing the boards for the rebound or elevation high above the rim to block a shot. It took him two years to overcome foot problems, but showed much better quickness, though not blazing speed, as a senior. He has a high release point getting off his jumper and excels finishing around the basket, where his turnaround jumper will be his NBA money shot.
