OVERVIEW

A great finisher around the hoop and a natural scoring slasher, Chris Douglas-Roberts is a crafty player with an array of moves to score. As a junior, he continued to improve his shot selection -- and field-goal percentage -- from the 3-point line. He has rare wingspan for a guard (81 inches) that he uses to his advantage on the defensive end and despite his lanky frame, he has developed into a good offensive rebounder.

The 43rd player in school history to score 1,000 points in his career, Douglas-Roberts ranks seventh on the school's all-time record list with a .272 percentage from the 3-point line and with 263 free throws made. His 1,545 points rank ninth and his .540 field-goal percentage placed him 11th in Tigers annals.

Douglas-Roberts began his prep career at Cass Tech, where he averaged 28 points, 10 rebounds and six assists per game as a point guard during his junior year. He then transferred to Northwestern High as a senior, but due to transfer rules, he was ineligible to play until midseason, as he finished with averages of 13.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.

Douglas-Roberts was rated the 22nd-best player in high school basketball by USA Today. Scout.com rated him the 30th-best player in the country and he was ranked the No. 15 shooting guard by Rivals.com.

In 2004, Douglas-Roberts played for the North Team at the USA Basketball Men's Youth Development Festival, helping lead his squad to the silver medal. He saw action in four of the five contests, as he averaged 5.5 points and 2.8 rebounds. He also shot 75 percent from the free throw line, which was first among all Festival participants.

In 2005-06, Douglas-Roberts appeared in 34 games and started 25. The Conference USA All-Freshman Team choice averaged 8.3 points and 3.3 boards per game while shooting 53.1 percent from the floor and 74.5 percent from the charity stripe. He ranked among Conference USA leaders in field-goal percentage (second) and free-throw percentage (10th) and was among the league's freshmen leaders, ranking fourth in scoring and fifth in steals (26).

As a sophomore, Douglas-Roberts garnered All-American honorable mention and first-team All-Conference USA accolades, in addition to earning All-District and NCAA Tournament All-South Region honors. He started all 35 games in which he played, missing two contests with a high right ankle sprain.

He finished as the team's leading scorer, averaging 15.4 points per game while shooting .543 from the field, .328 from 3-point range and .732 from the charity stripe. He averaged 3.4 rebounds and had 61 assists, 16 blocks and 39 steals.

As a senior, Douglas-Roberts was a consensus All-American and unanimous first-team All-Conference USA choice. He led the team with a career-high 18.1 scoring average, making 54.1 percent of his field goal tries. His 259 field goals made were the fourth-highest season total in school history. He averaged 4.1 rebounds per game, as he chipped in with 71 assists, 18 blocked shots and 49 steals.

ANALYSIS

Positives: Lacks ideal bulk but his 81-inch wingspan indicates he could earn several minutes at "3" spot ... Versatile backcourt player who really developed nicely as a shooting guard last season, but also has experience and decent ball-handling skills to run the point in stretches ... Shows good court vision and quickness and was a nice fit for the team's up-tempo attack ... Has the balance to slash to the basket from either side ... Has the vision to quickly locate the open teammate ... Still lacks bulk and strength, but has worked hard throughout the offseason to improve in these areas ... Because of his lithe frame, he is a slippery mover on the court and is very hard to contain on the move ... Prides himself on his strong work ethic and is a positive influence on the team's younger players on the court and in the locker room ... Was the best mid-range shooter in Conference USA, showing a soft touch executing his shot ... Has a quick release and a high release point shooting from long range, but has much of his success tossing in a soft floater ... Patient looking for an opening for his shot rather than forcing the issue, leading to his high success for making field goals (54.0 percent) for a player at his position ... Also works well without the ball in his hands ... Slippery getting past traffic into the lane to flip in a pull-up jumper, using his body control and length to convert on those attempts ... His floater is very consistent from the baseline, and he is a creative slasher who loves to play the transition game ... Struggled shooting from long range earlier in his career, but did some technique refinement, which helped him improve his 3-point consistency from 31.0 percent in 2005-06 to 41.3 percent in 2007-08 ... Effective spot-up shooter who has the body control to take the ball off the screen and drive into the lane to the basket, where he shows excellent elevation to flip the ball in at the rim ... Uses the glass well to get his floater into the basket and causes defenders to freeze in their tracks with the precise stop-and-go action he demonstrates when pulling up off the dribble to make his shot ... Very effortless unleashing his 3-point shot, but would be even more effective if he speeded up his release ... Efficient ball handler who does a very good job of creating a shot for himself or others off the dribble ... Good passing out to an open teammate from double teams ... Crafty player who will entice a defender with a slow, deliberate dribble and then simply spin away from the opponent or freeze his man with hesitation moves ... Fluid moving up and down the court and is very aware of protecting the ball ... Has an array of moves to the basket, executing nifty pump fakes to force the defender to commit too early ... Has the quickness to beat his man off the dribble consistently and explosive initial step to deliver on isolation plays ... While he lacks a sudden burst with the ball in his hands, he can catch a pass on the move and use his balance, body control and leaping skills to lay the ball up at the rim ... Tenacious defender who stays low in stance, using his wingspan well to impede the opponent's shot and shows good lateral agility to stay in from of his man to prevent drives to the basket ... Effective reading the guard's moves and is quick to get his hands into the dribble to cause the turnover.

Negatives: Lacks strength and bulk to handle small forwards and quicker guards can slip past his tall, lanky frame on the open court (better when facing up than trailing) ... Gets banged around when driving to the basket and while he draws contact well on the way to the rim, he does not have the ability to absorb all of that punishment (has played with minor injuries in each of his last three seasons) ... His marginal power base will see him sometimes passively back away rather than fight through screens ... Gets pushed out of the box often competing for the rebound, having to slip under blocks in order to get a piece of the ball ... Can put down a reverse dunk, on occasion, but he will usually get pushed out of the box too much to make that play often ... Improving from the perimeter, but can be a bit too deliberate getting his shot off, inviting a face-up defender to elevate and block his shots ... Prefers to shoot floaters from mid range and unlike most shooting guards, treys are not his strong suit ... Has an unorthodox shooting style and is a bit hunched over and unbalanced ... When playing on the outside, he does not show much creativity and is slow to get going on the way to the rim (better on the open court rather than coming from the corners) ... Has shown good ball-protection skills, but tries to get too crafty by baiting the defender with his high, loose dribble.

Compares to: RICHARD HAMILTON-Detroit ... Douglas-Roberts is nowhere near the smooth athlete that Hamilton is, but both have a sweet floater and good crossover action along with crafty pump fakes and hesitation moves to consistently fool their opponent on the way to the rim. Douglas-Roberts is a high-percentage shooter, a rarity for a guard, and effective finishing with either hand under the basket. His unorthodox shooting style and deliberate release on 3-point shots concerns some who doubt he'll have the same level of success driving past NBA defenders, but he has the range to connect from outside. He is a decent ball-handler, but he is not going to be able to get away with baiting NBA defenders to attack his high, loose dribble like he does against younger college players. Old timers that remember Louis Orr of the Knicks and Pacers will see a lot of similarities in Douglas-Roberts' game. He does several things well, but lacks the pure shooting stroke or scorer's ability to be ranked among the elite in this class.
