Vrbata netted a goal on a penalty shot with seven seconds left in Tuesday's 3-2 loss against Dallas.
Sure, it was a garbage-time goal, but it was pretty all the same, as Vrbata pulled a brilliant move to beat Kari Lehtonen. If you can get past his poor plus-minus, Vrbata has offered solid production for deeper fantasy formats, as he owns 23 points in 35 games.
With just one marker on 41 shots (a 2.4 shooting percentage) in December, Vrbata is eyeing positive regression in the goal column. He's been the lone reliable offensive contributor for Arizona, but Vrbata still sports an underwhelming eight goals and 22 points through 33 games. Still, Vrbata is worth owning in the majority of seasonal leagues because of his high shot volume (3.15 per game), and in the right matchups, he's a potential value play in daily contests because he's typically priced for profit.
Vrbata was rewarded with a goal Sunday against the Oilers after throwing the puck at the net.
Vrbata opened the scoring in Sunday's 2-1 victory over Edmonton by firing the puck towards the net only to see it redirected into the net off a defender. The tally was the 35-year-old's seventh of the season and third point in his previous five outings. The winger is one of the few bright spots on an otherwise struggling Yotes squad.
Vrbata may have fell out of favor in Vancouver, where he played the last two seasons, but his reunion with the Coyotes has him looking rejuvenated. The 35-year-old Czech has tacked on a team-high six goals with five helpers in 14 games, while sharing the points lead with second-year tantalizer Max Domi. As a fantasy owner, it's easy to overlook players on struggling teams -- Arizona is last in the Pacific Division (5-9-0) -- but don't make that mistake with Vrbata, as he's been playing terrific hockey.
Vrbata handed out a pair of assists -- one on the power play -- in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Avalanche.
Coming off a brutal season with Vancouver, expectations were low for Vrbata in his return to the desert for his third stint as a Coyote, but he's rattled off a solid four goals and nine points through 12 games. He's also gone plus-2 despite playing for a last-place Coyotes team that owns a minus-9 goal differential. Don't overreact to the veteran's good start, but there's clearly some value to be found here in deeper formats.
