Pistons' Ish Smith: Seeing consistent backup minutes
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith continues to see consistent minutes as the primary backup to Reggie Jackson.

Since Jackson made his season debut back on Dec. 4, Smith has seen a reduction in minutes, as expected, after he had filled in as the starter for the first month of the season. The Wake Forest product averaged nearly 30 minutes per game in the month of November, but that number shrunk to 21.4 minutes in December, and he's down to just 17.6 minutes per game through the Pistons' first six games of January. While starting, Smith was a reasonably productive fantasy option -- 10.7 points, 5.9 assists, 3.2 rebounds, 1.1 steals per game in November -- but he's no longer viable in most standard-sized leagues. Since Jackson's return (19 games), Smith has compiled averages of 5.5 points, 3.7 assists, 2.4 rebounds and 0.5 steals in 20.0 minutes per game.

Pistons' Ish Smith: Hands out 10 assists in Tuesday's win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith totaled seven points (2-11 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 3-4 FT), 10 assists and five rebounds across 30 minutes in Tuesday's 102-91 win over the Bulls.

Smith has come off the bench for the past two games with Reggie Jackson returning from an ankle injury, but Smith hasn't seen much of a reduction in playing time yet with the Pistons purposely limiting Jackson's workload. It may only take a few more games before Jackson resumes his usual 28-to-32 minute role, which will likely result in Smith picking up whatever time is left over at the point guard spot. There probably won't be enough minutes for him to turn in value outside of deeper leagues.

Pistons' Ish Smith: Moving to bench with Jackson returning
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Smith will move to a bench role for Sunday's game against the Magic, Rod Beard of The Detroit News reports.

With Reggie Jackson (knee) sidelined for the first 21 games of the Pistons' season, Smith has started at point guard, averaging 10.8 points, 6.4 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 1.0 steal over 29.6 minutes per game. Jackson was cleared to make his debut Sunday after taking part in shootaround without incident, and while coach Stan Van Gundy figures to hold him in the 20-to-25 minute range, it shouldn't be long before he regularly assumes a 30-minute role. Since Smith lacks a reliable outside shot, it's not expected that he'll play alongside Jackson very frequently, which likely means he'll be forced to settle for close to a 20-minute role upon shuffling back to the second unit. Smith isn't a strong hold in most leagues while his playing time looks to be on the decline.

Pistons' Ish Smith: Nearly approaches triple-double in Wednesday's win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith registered 19 points (9-12 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 1-2 FT), eight rebounds, eight assists and one block across 36 minutes in Wednesday's 121-114 win over the Celtics.

Smith has come on strong over the past four games with averages of 15.5 points and 5.3 assists per contest while shooting 58.7 percent from the floor, giving fantasy owners a nice sendoff before Reggie Jackson (knee) takes over as the starting point guard. It doesn't seem likely that Jackson will be available for the Pistons' final game of their road trip Friday against the Hawks, but he could make his season debut as soon as Sunday versus the Magic. Once Jackson is back, he'll presumably be in line for close to 30 minutes per contest, with Smith only picking up the leftover playing time at the position.

Pistons' Ish Smith: Turns in 16 points, seven dimes Friday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith registered 16 points (6-13 FG, 2-2 3Pt, 2-2 FT), seven assists, two rebounds and one steal across 34 minutes in Friday's 108-97 win over the Clippers.

The 16 points and two three-pointers tied season highs for Smith, who has acted as more of a facilitator than scorer while starting all 17 games at point guard in place of Reggie Jackson (knee). While it appears Jackson is nearing a return after upping his involvement in practices this week, Smith should maintain a high-minute starting role for at least a few more games. Once Jackson returns, however, Smith figures to lose nearly all of his fantasy value, as he'll probably have to settle for a 15-to-20 minute role in most contests.
