Harkless will move to the bench for Monday's game against the Spurs, Mike Richman of The Oregonian reports.
The Trail Blazers are set to be without Damian Lillard (foot), C.J. McCollum (hand) and Allen Crabbe (foot), so they'll go with a makeshift lineup that features Shabazz Napier, Pat Connaughton and Evan Turner at the top three spots, which leaves Harkless in a bench role. It's unclear if coach Terry Stotts likes Turner's play making ability more than Harkless to make up for the absences of his two star players, or if he's just trying to give Harkless some rest with the season winding down, but either way, it's likely a short term move and Harkless should be the presumed starter going into the playoffs.
Harkless provided 12 points (6-7 FG), three rebounds and three steals over 37 minutes in Saturday's 101-86 win over the Jazz.
On a night when Damian Lillard set a franchise record with 59 points and C.J. McCollum was only able to drain four of 20 shots, Harkless took on the role of second-leading shooter on the team. The fifth-year forward has hit double digits in the scoring column in four of the last six games and continues to serve as an occasionally viable source of points and rebounds as the season winds down.
Harkless recorded 17 points (7-10 FG, 3-5 3Pt), eight rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal across 36 minutes in Monday's 110-109 loss to the Timberwolves.
Harkless is riding a miniature scoring outburst, averaging 15.7 points on 64.5 percent from the field over his past three games. While those numbers are nice, it's more likely that he'll regress to his 10.1 season scoring average than keep up this pace for the remainder of the season.
Harkless tallied 13 points (5-8 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 3-3 FT), four rebounds, two assists and one block over 26 minutes in Saturday's 130-117 win over the Suns.
Harkless posted double digits in the scoring column for the second straight game while once again clearing the 60 percent mark from the field. The 23-year-old has upped his involvement on offense over the last two games, averaging 10.5 shots per contest after making five or fewer attempts at the basket in eight of the previous 10 games. With important offensive cog Jusuf Nurkic (leg) out for approximately two weeks, Harkless could see a boost in usage throughout that span of time.
Harkless posted 17 points (8-13 FG, 1-2 3Pt), six rebounds, three blocks and two steals over 32 minutes in Thursday's 117-107 win over the Rockets.
After six consecutive single-digit scoring efforts, Harkless bounced back with his best point tally since March 4. Harkless' 13 shot attempts were the most he'd put up since back on Feb. 13, as he took on a decidedly more secondary role as March unfolded and Jusuf Nurkic became increasingly integrated into the offense. However, as evidenced Thursday, the fifth-year pro remains capable of offering solid offensive production on occasion while also making serviceable contributions on the glass and in blocks.
