Canes' Staal (Upper Body) Placed On IR

Staal (upper body) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, retroactive to Oct. 11.The upper-body ailment has already sidelined Staal for well over a week, so he'll be eligible to come off IR at any time, but the expectation is that he'll miss at least a couple more games. Brody Sutter was recalled to provide depth until Staal returns.

The trip to Vancouver is next Tuesday, meaning coach Bill Peters believes Staal is still at least a week away from returning.

Staal (upper body) is not expected to return to action until the latter half of the Hurricanes' road trip beginning next week.After a break in their schedule over the weekend, the Hurricanes will resume play Tuesday in Winnipeg, but Staal likely won't be available until before the team's Oct. 23 tilt with the Flames. The Hurricanes will wait and see how he progresses over the next few days before determining if an IR stint will be necessary.

With a number of their top players ailing, the Hurricanes should benefit from the five-day break in their schedule after Thursday's game, but if Staal is still hurting next week, a move to injured reserve would likely be considered.
