Power Rankings: Albeit six games, Celtics living up to hype

Updated Nov. 13

The Boston Celtics are everybody's new toy. They can do no wrong, because in today's hype-filled world, they've actually lived up to expectations. Considering the media storm Danny Ainge's offseason moves created, that was nearly impossible to do.

Boston's Big Three was placed on the cover of every sports-related publication over the summer, practically set up to fail. Some openly questioned whether Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen could come in and immediately co-exist with holdover Paul Pierce to lift the Celtics up to previous heights, citing their egos as a major obstacle without even really knowing the personalities of the players involved.

For the most part, though, the new-look Celtics were crowned before ever even taking the court for their first exhibition game.

Their play through the first six games of the regular season has them standing as the last unbeaten team. They're the Christmas present you really wanted as a kid and when opened, actually lived up to every one of your expectations.

Garnett loves Allen, who loves Pierce and those three are loved by their teammates, coaches and front office staff whose job they've made so much easier. You love them, because they're fun to watch. Opponents don't necessarily love them, but even they can't help get stuck watching, hence all the lopsided scores.

  • Garnett leads the league in rebounding and has zoomed to the front of the line in an MVP race that was supposed to be wide open.
  • Pierce, el Capitan, has smiled more in the past two weeks than he has the past two years.
  • Allen is shooting over 50 percent from 3-point range, which really shouldn't be a surprise considering that the best long-range shooter in the game is getting wide-open looks he's only previously enjoyed during All-Star Weekend.

It's all new and shiny and those nationally televised blowouts have served as showcases to help capture your imagination. Just remember, this team isn't going to go 82-0. The Celts won't see real adversity until they hit the road against some quality Western Conference teams for a long stretch, something that won't happen until after February's All-Star break; they don't roll through Texas until late March.

Then we'll know exactly what Boston will be capable of. Until then, enjoy this and let your expectations run wild. Push them along like you would that neat new fire engine. Honk the horn. Drop the ladder. Tickle them like Elmo. Two weeks in, they're the beasts of the East and they've yet to break your heart.

The week's Power Rankings.
