Big Three? 1986 Celtics' Big Six trump '08 champs
So Freeman can have his Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. That's three great players, with Garnett a lock for the Hall of Fame, and Pierce and Allen most likely headed there as well. But on the 2008 Celtics, those are the only stars. Those are the only great players. Rajon Rondo is a serviceable point guard. Kendrick Perkins is, um, Kendrick Perkins. The Boston reserves? In two years, you won't remember any of them.
This is more an argument for the heart than the brain, but here are some numbers anyway: My 1986 Celtics hit 79.4 percent of their free throws and 50.8 percent from the floor. Freeman's Celtics shot 77.1 percent and 47.5 percent.
My Celtics had an assist-turnover ratio of nearly 2-to-1. Freeman's Celtics are more like 1.5-to-1.
Mine won 67 games in the tough Eastern Conference. His won 66 in the weak East.
Mine went 15-3 in the 1986 NBA playoffs. Mine were Tiger Woods.
Freeman's went 16-10 in the playoffs. His were Rocco Mediate.
My Celtics swept future champion Michael Jordan's Bulls in the first round. Freeman's Celtics needed a seventh game to get past future lottery team Atlanta in the first.
My Celtics then beat Dominique Wilkins' Hawks in five games. Freeman's Celtics needed seven to escape LeBron James' Cavaliers.
Mine swept the Bucks in four. Freeman's Celtics had to beat a tougher team to win the Eastern Conference -- Detroit -- but they needed six games to do it.
Both Finals went six games, but my Celtics beat the Twin Towers of Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson in the Finals. Freeman's only had to beat Kobe Bryant and the Andrew Bynum-less Basements.
Finally, and this is significant, my Celtics were brilliant. Dennis Johnson was a head coach in NBDL when he died last year at age 52. Teammates included future NBA coaches and executives Bird, McHale, Ainge, even Rick Carlisle and Jerry Sichting off the bench. Who are the future coaches from these Celtics? Sam Cassell for sure. Maybe P.J. Brown. We'll see.
Maybe if my Celtics played Freeman's Celtics, mine wouldn't win the slam-dunk competition at halftime. Maybe mine wouldn't even bother to try.
My Celtics would probably be resting on the bench with their feet up and their shoes off, waiting for a team to give them some real competition in the second half.
