Jun. 29--C.J. Miles will spend a second consecutive summer as a restricted free agent after the Jazz tendered him a one-year, $1.2 million qualifying offer on Saturday. The Jazz also exercised the third-year option in Paul Millsap's contract worth $797,581.
The Jazz will be able to match any offer Miles receives as a free agent. The 21-year-old guard drew interest from teams last summer but ultimately returned to the Jazz, where he averaged 5.0 points in 60 games.
Miles was one of three young shooting guards on the Jazz's roster last season, along with Ronnie Brewer and Morris Almond. But Miles will hit the market this summer with a greater body of work than last summer.
His representatives will point to a 10-game stretch at the end of December and start of January in which Miles averaged 10.5 points while shooting 55.6 percent overall and 45.8 percent from three-point range.
That was before Miles found himself as the odd man out of the rotation after Kyle Korver's arrival. Miles did start 13 games as an injury replacement for Andrei Kirilenko or Ronnie Brewer, and averaged 8.5 points in those games.
"As much as C.J. loves the city and loves his teammates," agent Billy Ceisler said Friday, "the one concern he has for himself, which is obvious to everyone, is the glut at the position."
Among the teams interested in Miles last summer were Miami, Cleveland, Dallas and San Antonio. From his draft class, Amir Johnson signed a three-year, $11 million contract with Detroit and Andray Blatche signed a five-year, $15 million contract with Washington.
The only way Miles could be packaged in a Jazz deal this summer would be through a sign-and-trade, which would bring him a minimum three-year contract.
