ORLANDO, Fla. -- Michael Beasley griped about some calls, tumbled after missing layups, then shook his head in disappointment after a rebound bounced off his outstretched hands.
His first summer league game drew raves.
In his second, well, Beasley looked like a rookie again.
One day after scoring 28 points in his much-hyped debut, Beasley returned to earth Tuesday, finishing with only nine points in Miami's 90-81 summer league win over New Jersey. The second overall pick in last month's draft was a mere mortal, missing all but one of his 13 shots from the field and collecting nearly as many fouls (seven, there's no automatic disqualification in summer league) as he did points.
Beasley might have left the game hurting physically -- he had to ditch the thick pad he donned at the start of the game to protect his cracked sternum because it impaired his movement, then got kicked in the left shin during a third-quarter collision and sported a large ice pack on that leg after the game.
But if his spirit was dampened by a 1-for-13 effort, a far cry from what he did in Miami's win over No. 1 pick Derrick Rose and Chicago in Monday's opener, he didn't let it show. Full story
Zo picks Wade as first Groove co-host
MIAMI -- Alonzo Mourning knows the statistics by heart, ticking them off one after another.
The Miami Heat center isn't talking about points, rebounds, blocked shots, or anything else that has to do with basketball. No, Mourning's real passion is improving the lives for children in South Florida, something his annual Zo's Summer Groove series of events has sought to do since its inception more than a decade ago.
He wants to change those numbers.
And he's invited Heat teammate Dwyane Wade to help that quest.
SuperSonics' name removed from site
OKLAHOMA CITY -- There was another sign of progress in the Seattle SuperSonics' transition to Oklahoma City as the team's website was updated to include its new home.
A visit to SuperSonics.com redirects visitors to the NBA Oklahoma City site, where logos with the team's former name have been taken down.
The Oklahoma City franchise is using the website to take names from people interested in buying season tickets when they go on sale.
SuperSonics owner Clay Bennett announced last week that he would be moving the team to Oklahoma City after reaching a settlement to exit a lease at Seattle's KeyArena.
Traylor heads back to Cavs
CLEVELAND -- Robert "Tractor" Traylor will rejoin the Cavaliers -- for the summer at least.
Traylor was selected Tuesday to Cleveland's 13-member summer league roster. The team is made up of young players like Cavaliers rookies J.J. Hickson and Darnell Jackson.
Traylor last played for the Cavaliers in 2005 and is one of the few veterans on the roster.
The team will play five games in Las Vegas beginning Monday against the New York Knicks.
Raptors sign guard Adams
TORONTO -- The Toronto Raptors signed guard Hassan Adams to a two-year deal.
Adams last played in the NBA in 2006-07, when he averaged 2.9 points and 1.3 rebounds in 61 games with New Jersey.
The six-foot-four, 220-pounder played in Italy last season. He attended the Raptors' free-agent camp in June.
The Los Angeles native is known as a tenacious defender. He was selected in the second round, 54th overall, in the 2006 NBA Draft by the Nets.
Jefferson excited to be in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE -- Yi Jianlian didn't want to play in Milwaukee. The man he was traded for insists he does.
The Bucks introduced Richard Jefferson on Monday after acquiring him from New Jersey on draft day in a trade for Bobby Simmons and the young Chinese star, who was the No. 6 pick last year.
The second-leading scorer in Nets history was surprised by the trade.
Jefferson said he has nothing against the city that Yi was reluctant to play in.
Kings sign top pick Thompson
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Sacramento Kings signed first-round pick Jason Thompson.
Thompson, a forward-center from Rider, was the 12th overall pick in last month's draft. He will make about $3.9 million in the first two years of his deal, with two years of team options worth more than $5.1 million.
Thompson finished a four-year career at Rider with averages of 16.7 points, 9.6 rebounds and 1.9 blocks. He will play on Sacramento's summer league team in Las Vegas starting this weekend.
