Magic trade Dooling for salary-cap room

Just how far down the road Smith will utilize it is unknown. He didn't tip his hand too much about his timetable.

"It just gives you flexibility to add someone if you don't have the money to spend," Smith said.

Whether that money could be earmarked to assist in trade talks to add another point guard like Memphis' Javaris Crittenton, he wouldn't say.

"It doesn't necessarily have a name on it," he said. "It can be something we do as the season unfolds, or do something with it now. But it doesn't have a name on it. We're looking at roster economy and trying to get better. If you have another asset to try to do a two-for-one, we could possibly do that, too."
