Dallas Mavericks to open training camp at SMU on Sept. 30

Sep. 6--The Dallas Mavericks are expected to open training camp on Sept. 30 at SMU.

Coach Rick Carlisle said Friday that going through two-a-day practices at the Mustangs' new $13-million practice facility would be a big plus for the Mavericks.

"It's sensational," Carlisle said. "We're going to have access to two full courts and with 18 or however many guys we have in camp, I just feel it's a good situation to have your camp somewhere that's a little different.

"I have a relationship with [SMU basketball coach] Matt Doherty and Mark [Cuban] has given SMU an opportunity to host us. It's great for them and really great for us."

SMU officials said the arrangement has not been finalized.

The Mavericks under Avery Johnson spent training camp in 2006 at the University of North Texas. Every other year since American Airlines Center opened, the team camped at the practice facility beneath the arena.

However, most NBA teams have practice facilities with, at least, two full courts. The Mavericks' practice gym has one court.

Carlisle, who took over for Johnson in May, said that players will not stay at a team hotel, but at their homes during camp.
