ATLANTA -- Dwight Howard had 29 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Orlando Magic to a 109-103 preseason victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Monday night.
Joe Johnson, who led the Hawks with 26 points, hit a 3-pointer with 1:10 remaining to pull the Hawks to 102-100. Howard responded with a 5-foot turnaround jumper to make it 104-100 with 54 seconds remaining.
Johnson followed with another 3, leaving the Hawks a point down, but the Atlanta star missed a 12-footer with 27 seconds left for the lead. Howard got the rebound and was fouled. He made one of two free throws.
The Hawks had one more chance, but Mike Bibby missed a long jumper with 15 seconds remaining. Rashad Lewis hit two free throws to clinch it, and added two more for the final margin.
Johnson also had seven rebounds and five assists. Josh Smith added 13 points and five assists, Al Horford had 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Bibby scored 13 points and doled out five assists.
Lewis scored 25 points and pulled down eight rebounds for the Magic. Courtney Lee chipped in with 13 points and four rebounds.
The Hawks were up 27-26 after the first quarter, but the Magic opened up a 39-29 lead 4½ minutes into the second quarter. Johnson took over, scoring 10 points in the last 5½ minutes of the half to pull the Hawks to 54-53 at the break. Full story
Knicks 114, Nets 106
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Wilson Chandler scored 22 points in his first start of the preseason, leading the New York Knicks to a victory over the New Jersey Nets.
Looking increasingly comfortable running new coach Mike D'Antoni's system, the Knicks shot 50 percent in their second straight exhibition victory. They were especially sharp in the latter stages of the first and third quarters, when Nate Robinson and Stephon Marbury came off the bench to play with Chandler.
Robinson led the Knicks with 26 points, including a floater with 1:46 remaining after the Nets had trimmed New York's huge lead to four. Marbury had nine points on 3-of-3 shooting and six assists in just 16 minutes.
Normally the backup small forward, Chandler slid over to the power forward spot to replace David Lee, who has a sprained right ankle. Chandler was 10-of-15 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds.
Trail Blazers 112, Kings 98
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- LaMarcus Aldridge scored 24 points, Brandon Roy added 21 and the Portland Trail Blazers never trailed in a victory over the Sacramento Kings.
The Kings could not contain Aldridge, who made nine of 16 shots and had six rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Blazers. Portland led by four points after three quarters and stretched the lead to as many as 11 in the fourth.
Rookie guard Rudy Fernandez made four 3-pointers and had 16 points for the Blazers, while Greg Oden added 13 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Portland made 12 of 25 3-pointers.
Kevin Martin scored 34 points and John Salmons added 27 for the Kings, who lost their fifth straight. The Kings (1-6) conclude the preseason Thursday against visiting Houston. Sacramento travels to Minnesota on Oct. 29 for its season opener.
Suns 111, Bobcats 108 (2OT)
PHOENIX -- Matt Barnes made two layups in the closing seconds of the second overtime and the Suns celebrated Amare Stoudemire's return to action with a victory over the Bobcats.
The Suns trailed 108-105 late in the second OT before Robert Hite hit a jumper and Barnes sealed the win with his two baskets.
The win evened the Suns' exhibition record at 3-3. Charlotte is winless in six games.
Charlotte scored the first six points of the first overtime, but the Suns fought back on a driving layup by Goran Dragic, a 3-pointer by Hite and a dunk by Louis Amundson, tying the score at 102, forcing a second overtime.
