Veteran McDyess leaving Pistons to join Spurs

SAN ANTONIO -- The San Antonio Spurs landed free agent Antonio McDyess on Wednesday in another big offseason pickup for the aging NBA power that apparently isn't ready to fade away just yet.

McDyess, who despite being 34 was among the most sought players on the market this summer, reached a deal with the Spurs and is expected to sign later this week, team spokesman Cliff Puchalski said.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the Spurs had their full midlevel exception, worth about $5.85 million this season, to offer the 6-foot-9 forward. McDyess spent the last five seasons with Detroit, which also officially lost Rasheed Wallace on Wednesday when the veteran signed with Boston.

The Spurs reportedly sought Wallace, too, but got what they were looking for in McDyess: a big and proven frontcourt presence alongside Tim Duncan. The Spurs have won four NBA championships in the Duncan era, but their star centerpiece will be 33 come next year's playoffs.

With their window for a fifth title shrinking, the Spurs began a busy offseason in June by trading for Milwaukee swingman Richard Jefferson in a four-player deal that pushed San Antonio into the luxury tax.

Between Jefferson and McDyess, the Spurs have added two former Olympians to their lineup after being ousted in the first round of the playoffs last season for the first time since 2000. Following that series, the Spurs candidly admitted to not packing the same firepower as Dallas.

McDyess averaged 9.6 points and 9.8 rebounds in his 14th NBA season. His rebounding average last season was the third highest of his career.

The second overall pick in the 1995 draft, McDyess spent six seasons in Denver and also had stops in Phoenix and New York. He has never won an NBA title, going to Detroit the year after the Pistons won their last in 2004.

San Antonio also added a lesser-known big man Wednesday in Marcus Haislip, the former first-round pick who spent the past two years in Spain after fizzling in his first three NBA seasons. The 6-10 forward was picked 13th overall by Milwaukee in 2002 before going to Europe to work on his game.

The Spurs also brought back forward Malik Hairston, who played 15 games with the Spurs last season and spent much of the year in the NBA development league.

San Antonio needed size after dealing backups Fabricio Oberto and Kurt Thomas in the Jefferson trade. The deal amounted to a salary dump for the Bucks, who wanted to shed the $29.2 million owed Jefferson over the next two seasons.

Wow.  The Spurs get McDyess without giving up any players.  Sure he's older and weakened by past injuries, but this guy has HEART, he plays with professionalism and is a TEAM player.  McDyess fits into the Spurs System so well and is like having a scoring Kurt Thom ...(more)

Another solid pickup for the Spurs.  I was a little afraid about what they were going to do for front court depth after trading away Oberto and Thomas.  Slide Timmy to the 5 and start McDyess?  Is that what they plan on doing?  Or are they going to possibly start Haislip at the 5?  Kind of curious to see what they do ...(more)

I keep wondering if Manu Ginobili has any value on the market these days. I think the Spurs should look to part ways with him as he's been so injury prone, in part due to his slashing style and aggressive moves to the basket. He's great when healthy, but when I was in town, ...(more)

So what's your take on McDyess, I didn't get to watch him play much last year. I know he is a banger down low and can shoot the mid range jumper but what else can ya'll tell me about him.......his age kind of has me sceptical of his play down the stretch and how often was he injured while on the Pistons?     &n ...(more)

Man, best of luck to Antonio.  Really sad to see him go.  At least he's going to a class organization like the Spurs.  I can respect that.  He gave his all for the Pistons, and always accepted whatever role he was asked to play.  San Antonio, you'll love havin ...(more)

The Spurs are gradually making their wayback up to tehe top of the Western Conference with the offseason that they have been having. Now with the pickup of Antonio McDyess, San Antonio has solidified thier front court, in which they really wanted to help out future hall of famer Tim Duncan. With ...(more)

I love the Spurs, and hope that this is a deal for not much longer than 1 season.  McDyess is a decent player, but I don't think he has much left in the tank.  He can drain 15 footers with wreckless and abandon, and rebounds nicely.  I guess this means that Drew Gooden is going bye bye bye.

Thats what San Antonio has become. Are you old? Do you only do 1 or two things well? Come on down and sign with the Spurs! We serve Marie Callendars dinner every day at 4 so you can watch Murder She Wrote and be in bed by 7.

Good Luck, 'Dyess...

If ever anyone played hard, kept his mouth shut, and was a team player - THIS is the man.

Good luck in the 2010 Playoffs with the Spurs.

And I have to spend the next 5 years watching the Nut-grabbing antics of Loser-Ben Gordon.  Pathetic...
