Varejao's new deal with Cavs reportedly worth $50M

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Cavaliers and Anderson Varejao -- the energetic big man with long, curly hair known to the team's fans as "Wild Thing" -- have agreed on a multiyear contract.

Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry announced the signing Thursday afternoon, though terms were not disclosed. The 6-11 center/forward from Brazil has played five years in the NBA, all with the Cavaliers.

The deal was first reported by the Plain Dealer late Wednesday. Agent Dan Fegan told the newspaper that the club and Varejao agreed on a six-year contract worth up to $50 million. Fegan did not return messages Thursday from the Associated Press.

Ferry said that after Varejao did not exercise his option on a $6.2 million contract for next season, making him an unrestricted free agent, both sides wanted to reach a new deal to keep him with the Cavaliers.

"From the start of free agency, Anderson made it clear he wanted to be a part of our future and that he loved being in Cleveland," Ferry said. "He brings many valued contributions to our team on and off the court and plays with relentless passion and energy every play. He is an elite defender and we want to continue building our strong defensive identity."

Known for his hustle, Varejao posted career-highs with 42 starts, 8.6 points per game and a field-goal percentage of .536 last season, when the Cavs won a league-high 66 regular-season games but were eliminated in the Eastern Conference finals by Orlando.

Doyel: Seriously? | Free agents: East | West

The signing is the second major offseason move by the Cavaliers, who completed a blockbuster trade June 25 to acquire center Shaquille O'Neal from the Phoenix Suns.

"Andy wanted to stay in Cleveland," Fegan told the Plain Dealer. "He feels there is unfinished business -- to win an NBA championship."

Varejao had interest from several teams, including the Portland Trail Blazers and Oklahoma City Thunder, and other potential sign-and-trade offers from other teams without salary-cap space. Fegan said several teams were willing to offer Varejao contracts that averaged $10 million per season.

A new Varejao deal is a sign any previous animosity between the player and Cavaliers management is no long an issue. The two sides bickered over a contract in 2007, and Varejao missing the first part of that season in a holdout.

The deal reportedly will keep Varejao's salary cap number to a little more than $7 million for the 2010-11 season, which could help Cleveland's position next summer, when Cavaliers superstar LeBron James potentially could be a free agent.

In my opinion, the Cavs really didn't overpay for Varejao by much...but only time will tell. If Varejao is able to considerably improve his offensive game in the next 1-2 years, I think the salary of 6 years, 42 million guaranteed (approx. $7 million/year) is about the market price for Varejao. If you look at  Chad Ford's (espn.com) article on the top free agents this year and their market va ...(more)

I'm sure this has been said before but wow!  This guy gets more than Shawn Marion and Ron Artest!  Give me a break.  Marion or Artest would have been a perfect fit in Cleveland and at a bargain price compared to the jack they gave to this clown.  I know it would have taken a sign and trade but still to get Mar ...(more)

I cannot believe this deal!! 8-10 million (these deals never seam to be reported correctly) a year for 8 points a game. Starts half your games (mostly do to injury) shoots 53 % on the year but thats easy to do when you only take 6 shots a game, most from inside 5 ft. Has a career ppg of 6.....SIX!!
I can get that the Cavalier

Varejo's agent is a genius (apparently). Even if he only gets the $42 million over 6 that is guaranteed, you have to figure that the Cavs could have done better.  I think there are some posibilities:

1)  I wonder if Varejo's agent Fegan is making some moves behind the scenes with the Cavs that include some of Fegan's other clients - maybe a Ruben Patterson or down the ...(more)

Are you serious? Danny Ferry just shelled out $50 million for a guy who averages 8.6 ppg??? All the free agents they could of went after and they do this? Unbelieveable. Just under $10 million a year and they could of landed Charlie Villanueva who got $7 million a year. I'm not quite sure how some of you think this is a great move. This guy held out last year claiming he wanted a huge salary and w ...(more)

Yeah, there are none of you on here. When one of us here can successfully run a basketball team that is competing for a championship than we can call Ferry as stupid as we want, until then just trust that he knows what he is doing.... We have no reason to beleive otherwise.

None of us have any idea what will make a team better or worse. When AI went to Denver and Brand went to Philly th

This really doesn't make much sense for a back-up Center to O'Neil.  He's versatile but at this price?  He won't be a future starter that would/will last either.  Might have been smarter to sign him for a year and then attempt to move him for a future draft pick next year.  Now they are stuck with him and next year becomes just about all or nothing.  A championship or ...(more)

Does this money count against the cap?  I don't think it does, but still this is the worst move the Cavs could have done.  He can't score and his shot looks like my 3 yr old trying to get the ball to the rim....

Not a wise move Ferry!
