Rubio backs out of principle T-Wolves deal to stay in Spain

MINNEAPOLIS -- After saying all summer long that his preference was to play in the NBA, Ricky Rubio apparently got a case of cold feet at the last minute.

Less than 48 hours after the Timberwolves, Rubio's agents and the Spanish team DKV Joventut agreed in principle on a deal to bring the 18-year-old point guard to Minnesota, Rubio changed his mind.

Too early to howl 'mistake' over drafting teen Wolf

He told Timberwolves president David Kahn on Monday night that he wanted to stay in Spain for the next two years to better prepare for life in the NBA -- a blow to a team that was hoping to have the popular passer on the court this fall.

Timberwolves: Kahn statement | Rubio: NBA was too risky

"Of course there's disappointment, but I don't think that disappointment should overshadow the big picture, which is, he's still so young," Kahn said Tuesday during a call from Spain, where he spent the weekend negotiating the deal. "It appears now we will have a two-year wait. But if you frame it as he'll be 20 years old and he'll have two more years to develop, I can think of a lot worse things to happen to us as a franchise."

The Timberwolves drafted Rubio fifth overall in June, even though he was still under contract with DKV Joventut in a deal that included a $8.1 million buyout clause. Kahn made three trips to Spain over the summer to try and help Rubio's representatives negotiate that number down, a process that was hindered by NBA guidelines limiting the amount of money Minnesota could contribute to $500,000.

Kahn said Rubio's agent, Dan Fegan, delivered a package of endorsement deals and sponsorships that helped make the NBA deal attractive enough for Rubio and Joventut to enter into an agreement on Saturday night.

When Rubio backed out of the deal, DKV Joventut reluctantly agreed to trade him to rival Regal FC Barcelona, which will pay $5.3 million to buy out his contract. The buyout, Kahn said, is the largest in European basketball history.

In a statement, Joventut noted the "big effort" by everyone to reach a deal.

"In front of this situation, and in contradiction with what he has been saying to us and to Timberwolves' representatives from time to time, the player has announced the decision that he wants to be transferred to FC Barcelona," the team said.

The deal with FC Barcelona requires Rubio to stay in Spain through the 2010-11 season, at which time the buyout price tag plummets to about $1.4 million. That's a much more manageable number for Rubio to afford, but he said he was more concerned about being ready for the NBA.

"The reason leading me to take this next step is to have a period of preparation to better take the challenge of the NBA in better conditions as a player," Rubio said in a statement. "The Minnesota Timberwolves continue to be my first option and I wish to play with them in the near future."

So what changed between Saturday and Monday?

Kahn said Rubio and his family were receiving pressure from his Spanish national team teammates, members of the Spanish media and other people in their hometown to stay in Spain.

"It's just been a tough summer," Kahn said. "From an 18-year-old's perspective and his family's perspective, it was very nerve-racking."

The decision saves Rubio money in the short term, but could bring long-term consequences, both on and off the court.

The Timberwolves will hold Rubio's NBA rights as long as he is playing professionally. They also have rookie point guard Jonny Flynn, who was drafted No. 6 overall right behind Rubio, to take over while Rubio is in Spain.

Flynn impressed at the Las Vegas summer league, and Kahn said he will likely be named the starter going into training camp.

"I explained to [Rubio] that I can't predict the future," Kahn said. "I did specifically mention that Jonny would be two years ahead of him. He understood that."

When Rubio does come over, Kahn said he will be subject to the NBA rookie scale from this year. That means he'll get a four-year deal worth more than $15 million and will be two years further away from the lucrative unrestricted free-agent market.

Still, Kahn said he had no regrets about choosing a player many scouts have called the most exciting point guard to enter the draft in years.

"No matter what our circumstances are two years from now," Kahn said, "I believe that he was the highest and best value pick we could have made the way things developed that night."

Minnesota came out of this just fine.

How many guys have come out of HS/college only to ride the pine and collect a check for 4 years, then get paid big-time on projected upside by another team via free agency?  Jermaine O'Neal and TMac come to mind.  Also Darius Miles,

I don't know why everyone is freaking out over him coming over in two years and not now. If you've ever watched him play a whole game, you would realize that his one-on-one defense has gaping holes. He reads passing lanes but that's about it. He is flashy but careless and could stand to put on at least 20 pounds. Two more years will give him time to develop and will help him in the long run. He wi ...(more)

I always thought that if you entered the draft it meant you wanted to play in the NBA, There are alot of people out there that would have loved the chance to be drafted and play, and then you have someone like this that just disgraces the name of the NBA and "Brett Farves" the idea of playing or not and decides months later to go play overseas, I would never want him on my team because he has show ...(more)

Another waste for the TimberPuppies. I mean is anyone really surprised by this? How would you react if you are a god in your home country and a bottom dweller team from another country drafted you...then drafted another guy at your same position! What a slap in the face that would be. Now flip that and the Wolves draft Steph Curry. Instead of getting another PG they get the best shooting guard ava ...(more)

Rubio just costs future generations of euroleaguers and international players the opportunity to be drafted high in the NBA.  To be honest, this is fine by me because only a few of them have ever lived up to the hype.  However, it's a shame this little boy (Rubio) did this though because there are probably thousands of little Rubios running around in europe who will now never get their s ...(more)

He gets drafted by New York or Miami or Chicago or New Jersey or Los Angeles or any other big market team. He's blowing smoke. Yi Jianlian did it and Rubio is doing the same thing. He's trying to save face by saying the "right things" to not make himself look like a jackass. Screw you Rubio. You're one of the many things wrong w ...(more)

The NBA needs to make a rule about foreign players entering the NBA, getting drafted then not coming to the US to play.  First it's unfair to the teams, esp a team like the Timberwolves.  They essentially wasted their 5th round pick. They could have taken someone else with that pick that they could have used or even traded ...(more)

Rubio is scum. He doesn't want to play in Minnesota, and his family/agent and everyone he's associated with wants him to be in a "big" Market.. I'm so glad he is staying in Europe. I hope he never sees the NBA, I'm so sick of these teenage kids who think they are better than a multi-BILLION dollar business. Go rot in Europe for all I care. Flynn will lead the team just fine...

Hey Ricky grow up first and then be a man and make a decision. You screwed the t-wolves out of there pick by choosing to stay in the weak europe league. I'm sick of NBA teams passing on good american players for these shot in the dark european players that usually never pan out to better than a deep bench player anyways. BE a MAN you little boy and honor your commitment to the team th ...(more)

Play in some league that features long bus rides, 1 star hostels, and arenas 'filled' with 1000 fans each night. The NBA doesn't need you punk, you need the NBA.

Guys like this are what ruins the whole concept of the draft. You don't get to pick who you play for, sorry Charlie.

The deceptive and poorly worded article title can be read to make someone think that Rubio's backing out of a different (overseas) deal in order to play for the T-Wolves this season...which after quickly skimming the article is not the case.  Be clearer in your grammar for article titles!  Obviously I know now, but somebody needs to step his/her game up when giving a name to these articl ...(more)

Waiting two years for an 18 year old is just fine. He develops playing more minutes on someone else's dime. You lock his rookie contract in much later into his twenties if you sign him.

And the biggest reason of all: You gave up Mike Miller and Randy Foy

He couldnt hold Johnny Flynn's jockstrap to begin with

He should stay his Jonas Brothers lookin a$$ over in europe.

Flynn will be a better NBA player anyways.....they should just trade Rubio's rights and get something for it since he obviously doesnt want to play in Minnesota.

Flynn will be the man for the T Wolves, and he will make the most of the opportunity.
